Job Overview:
The Sr. Director of Community Positive Energy Transition (CPET) will play a pivotal role in leading WWF’s efforts to ensure that the transition to clean energy is conducted in a manner that safeguards biodiversity, ecosystems, and local communities. This position will involve developing and executing a comprehensive global strategy that addresses the social and environmental impacts associated with the extraction and use of critical minerals necessary for clean energy technologies. The Sr. Director will work closely with various stakeholders, including governments, mining companies, and NGOs, to promote sustainable practices and circular economy approaches that minimize the demand for primary minerals. The role requires a strategic thinker who can align CPET initiatives with WWF’s broader conservation mission, particularly in priority regions such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Arctic regions of the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Sr. Director will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
  • Building partnerships with key stakeholders such as governments, mining companies, renewable energy developers, and Indigenous communities to promote sustainable value chains for energy transition minerals.
  • Convening multi-stakeholder working groups to advance sustainable mineral resource management.
  • Representing WWF in international consortia and industry associations focused on supply chain integrity and sustainable development.
  • Leading assessments of ecological risks associated with mining and processing critical minerals, establishing science-based targets and environmental safeguards.
  • Developing white papers, policy briefs, and sustainability standards for responsible mineral sourcing.
  • Championing innovative solutions such as recycled material sourcing and mineral substitution to reduce ecosystem pressure.
  • Managing the CPET budget and ensuring timely reporting to donors.
  • Collaborating with WWF communicators to enhance the visibility of CPET initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree in environmental science, natural resource management, sustainability, international development, or a related field. A minimum of 12 years of experience in sustainable mining practices and policies is required, along with extensive experience in programmatic design, management, and coalition building. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to conservation and climate change, possess exceptional communication and presentation skills, and have proven experience in fundraising and donor engagement. Experience working in diverse cultures and geographies is essential, as is the ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.

Educational Background:
An advanced degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, natural resource management, sustainability, or international development is mandatory for this position. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of environmental conservation and sustainable practices in the context of energy transition.

Experience:
The position requires at least 12 years of relevant experience in sustainable mining practices and policies. Candidates should have a proven track record in programmatic design and management, as well as coalition building. Experience in fundraising and engaging with donors is also essential, along with the ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed organization.

Languages:

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Washington, D.C., with a hybrid work structure requiring a minimum of two days a week in the office. The salary range for this position is between $144,000 and $206,90
