Job Overview: The primary objective of this consultancy position is to provide simultaneous interpretation and written translation services from Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia and/or Portuguese to English, and vice versa. The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Country Representative and National Programme Officer(s) at UN Women Timor Leste. The role requires the consultant to undertake content translation as needed, ensuring that all translations are of high quality and submitted in a timely manner. Additionally, the consultant will provide simultaneous interpretation services during events conducted by UN Women or its partners, facilitating effective communication between English and the other languages involved. The consultant is expected to deliver fluent and easily understandable interpretations, contributing to the overall success of UN Women’s initiatives and events.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:
Undertake content translation from Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia and/or Portuguese to English and vice versa as required by UN Women.
Submit quality final translations in a timely manner to the Country Representative and/or National Programme Officer(s).
Provide quality simultaneous interpretation services during events conducted by UN Women or partners, translating from English to Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia and/or Portuguese and vice versa.
Ensure timely submission of all translation content, maintaining high standards of accuracy and clarity.
Collaborate with UN Women staff to understand the context and nuances of the material being translated or interpreted, ensuring that the intended message is conveyed effectively.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and deliverables.
Required Qualifications: The consultant must meet the following qualifications:
Hold a high school diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
At least 2 years of experience in translation and interpretation services is required.
Proven experience working with government institutions and the United Nations is an advantage.
Excellent spoken and written communication skills in Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia/Portuguese and English are essential.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum requirement. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as linguistics, translation, or international relations would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in translation and interpretation. Experience working with governmental bodies or international organizations, particularly the United Nations, is highly desirable. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to handle complex translation tasks and provide high-quality interpretation services in a professional setting.
Languages: Fluency in Tetum/Bahasa Indonesia/Portuguese and English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess excellent spoken and written communication skills in all these languages. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, allowing for direct engagement based on need and availability within the contract period for a pre-agreed fee. The consultant is responsible for covering transportation costs within Dili and telecommunication expenses. UN Women will provide necessary materials for the assignment and cover transportation and daily subsistence allowance (DSA) for work-related travel outside Dili. Performance will be evaluated based on timeliness, responsibility, initiative, communication, accuracy, and quality of deliverables.
