Job Overview: The Laboratory and Diagnostic Specialist plays a crucial role in providing technical guidance for the STRIDES Activity’s laboratory and diagnostic strategy. This position involves supporting in-country staff with technical requirements in workplan design and quality assurance, implementing and monitoring strategic initiatives, and contributing expertise through the development and management of reports and technical materials. The Specialist will work closely with the Laboratory and Diagnostic Advisor and both in-country and HQ STRIDES teams to evaluate programmatic effectiveness, oversee technical aspects, and provide technical assessment reports. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of laboratory systems and the ability to adapt strategies based on site-level findings and operational constraints, ensuring that all activities align with approved workplans and guidance.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory and Diagnostic Specialist include providing day-to-day technical implementation support for laboratory and diagnostic strengthening activities, mentoring laboratory staff, and ensuring adherence to protocols. The Specialist will implement, monitor, and update laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training materials, while also supporting laboratories in applying quality improvement actions based on routine supervision and performance findings. Additionally, the Specialist will contribute to the development and writing of technical briefs and reports, conduct analysis of STRIDES implementation to identify areas for improvement, and assist with overall management to ensure coordination and field-level implementation. The role also involves building productive working relationships with national and international organizations, preparing work plans and reports for stakeholders, and ensuring that STRIDES laboratory/diagnostic activities are on track with approved workplans.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Master’s Degree or International Equivalent in Knowledge/Information Services, Health, Human Development, Microbiology, Clinical Diagnostics, or a related field. Candidates must have demonstrated experience with laboratory systems strengthening, diagnostic network assessment, and specimen referral systems. Experience working with human and/or animal health laboratories, including national reference laboratories and veterinary laboratories, is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience in developing SOPs, technical guidance, assessment tools, and quality manuals. A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience managing data collection and technical assistance is typically required, along with proven knowledge in the diagnosis of infectious diseases and familiarity with ISO standards related to laboratory practices.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field such as Knowledge/Information Services, Health, Human Development, Microbiology, or Clinical Diagnostics.
