The mission of UNSOS is to enhance the security and stability of Somalia through effective support and coordination of international efforts in the region. Job Overview:
The Medical Officer position at UNSOS involves a range of clinical duties under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or their representative. The role is crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of UN personnel stationed in Somalia. The Medical Officer will be responsible for providing primary health care services at the Baidoa Level-I clinic, which includes consultation and treatment of patients, as well as responding to medical emergencies 24/
  • The position requires the Medical Officer to ensure the availability of medical supplies and the proper functioning of medical equipment, while also adhering to medical ethics and optimizing resource use. Additionally, the Medical Officer will coordinate training programs for AMISOM medical staff to enhance their capabilities in emergency medical response. This role also involves participation in the planning and implementation of health education initiatives, infection control measures, and public health guidance within the mission. The Medical Officer will play a vital role in the overall health management of the mission, contributing to the development of a robust health care system in a challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Medical Officer will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: conducting day-to-day clinical duties such as patient consultations and treatments; providing primary health care services at the Baidoa clinic; ensuring the availability of medical supplies and the proper functioning of medical equipment; coordinating training programs for AMISOM medical staff; assisting in the procurement of medical supplies and equipment; participating in the Mission Crisis Management team for Mass Casualty Incidence (MCI) response; organizing medical referrals and evacuations; providing health education to mission personnel; addressing environmental and occupational health issues; implementing infection control measures; providing public health guidance; submitting medical reports to the CMO; and carrying out any additional tasks assigned by the CMO. Furthermore, the Medical Officer is expected to engage in volunteerism activities, contribute to UNV publications, and assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for new volunteers.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Medical Officer position must possess a valid medical degree from a recognized institution. They should have a strong understanding of clinical practices and procedures, particularly in emergency medicine and primary health care. The role requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to medical ethics and the ability to manage resources effectively. Educational Background:
