Job Overview:
The position of National Specialist for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) involves the development and implementation of an impact framework for the SDGs within the context of a specific project. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring that the project aligns with the broader objectives of sustainable development as outlined by the UN. This role requires a deep understanding of the SDGs, as well as the ability to translate these goals into actionable strategies that can be implemented at the national level. The specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to promote the integration of the SDGs into national policies and practices. The position is expected to last for 18 months, with a maximum of 10 working days on the ground in Algeria, emphasizing the need for effective remote collaboration and communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Specialist for the SDGs include but are not limited to:
  • Developing a comprehensive impact framework for the SDGs that aligns with the project objectives.
  • Conducting assessments to identify gaps and opportunities for integrating the SDGs into national policies.
  • Collaborating with government officials and stakeholders to promote awareness and understanding of the SDGs.
  • Facilitating workshops and training sessions to build capacity among stakeholders regarding the implementation of the SDGs.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the progress of the project in relation to the SDGs, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Engaging with local communities to ensure their perspectives and needs are considered in the implementation of the SDGs.
  • Liaising with UNDP and other international organizations to share best practices and lessons learned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and their implications for national development. They should have experience in project management, particularly in the context of sustainable development initiatives. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in order to effectively convey complex information to various audiences. Familiarity with the UN system and experience working in international development contexts will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as international development, public policy, environmental science, or a related discipline is required. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant field will be given preference. Additional certifications or training related to sustainable development or project management will be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of professional experience in the field of sustainable development, with a focus on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Experience working with governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as international agencies, is highly desirable. Proven track record of managing projects and working in multi-disciplinary teams is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in both French and Arabic is mandatory, as these are the primary languages of communication in Algeria. Proficiency in English is considered a strong asset, as it will facilitate communication with international stakeholders and access to global resources.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 18 months, with a maximum of 10 working days required on-site in Algeria. This role is classified as an individual contractor position, which may offer flexibility in terms of working hours and location.
