Job Overview:
The position of Legal Consultant for Mock Trial involves a comprehensive engagement in enhancing the legal framework and support systems for women and girls affected by technology-facilitated violence against women and girls (TFVAWG) in Egypt. The consultant will be responsible for designing and delivering mock trials aimed at criminal justice practitioners, developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for legal clinics, and conducting training sessions for law students. This role is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by digitalization while promoting human security and legal aid for vulnerable populations. The consultant will work closely with UNODC’s Criminal Justice Expert and collaborate with UN Women and ITU teams to ensure effective implementation of the tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Developing and designing mock trials focused on TFVAWG for criminal justice practitioners, which involves compiling relevant case studies and creating training materials.
  • Co-facilitating the mock trials, ensuring effective delivery and engagement with participants, including conducting wrap-ups and summarizing key learnings.
  • Preparing and disseminating a comprehensive report post-mock trial to analyze its impact, capture lessons learned, and provide recommendations for future actions.
  • Developing comprehensive SOPs for the operation of legal clinics at selected law schools, including guidance on implementation.
  • Co-delivering training sessions to law students on the operation of legal clinics and the provision of legal aid to women and girls affected by cyber VAW&G.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, criminal law, international law, criminology, international relations, gender studies, or law enforcement. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the law field at either the international or national level is required. Proven experience in developing manuals and strategies related to gender and criminal justice is essential, along with practical experience in providing technical assistance and training for criminal justice practitioners or related fields. Experience within the United Nations system is considered desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as law, criminal law, international law, criminology, international relations, gender studies, or law enforcement. Candidates with a first-level university degree in similar fields, combined with additional qualifying work experience, may also be considered.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the legal field, either at the national or international level. Candidates should have a strong background in developing strategies and manuals related to gender and criminal justice, as well as practical experience in delivering training and technical assistance to criminal justice practitioners or in related fields.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, fluency in oral and written Arabic is mandatory. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is considered an advantage.
