  • Its primary mission is to assist Libyans in navigating the complex political transition of the country. UNSMIL's core mandate is to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process aimed at restoring peace, stability, and unified governance. The organization operates with impartiality to facilitate dialogue among various political, security, and civil society actors, aiming for inclusive and lasting solutions to Libya's institutional divisions and prolonged political impasse. UNSMIL also plays a crucial role in preparing for credible, inclusive, and peaceful national elections, supporting the establishment of a constitutional basis and legal framework for these elections, and ensuring that all voices, including those of women, youth, and marginalized communities, are heard in the political process. The mission also monitors political developments, works to prevent and mitigate spoilers, and supports the implementation of the October 2020 ceasefire agreement. UNSMIL advocates for human rights, rule of law, and transitional justice, while facilitating humanitarian assistance and promoting inclusive governance and local-level reconciliation. The organization is guided by the principles of Libyan sovereignty, impartiality, and respect for human rights, and it launched a new political process in December 2024 to address the ongoing political impasse in Libya.

Job Overview:
The Communications Assistant will play a vital role in supporting the Public Information and Communications Section of UNSMIL. This position requires an experienced and creative individual who can contribute to media monitoring and content creation. The Communications Assistant will assist the communications team in developing digital outreach and social media campaigns that support the political process in Libya. This includes creating multimedia content that supports the good offices and political meetings of the Mission, as well as developing educational campaigns and content aimed at informing the Libyan public about the Mission's activities. The role also involves producing daily headline readouts and media monitoring analysis, which are essential for keeping the public informed about the political developments in Libya. An excellent command of Arabic is a prerequisite for this position, as the Communications Assistant will be responsible for translating content into Arabic or English as needed. The position requires close collaboration with the communications team to ensure that all communications efforts are aligned with the Mission's objectives and effectively engage the Libyan public.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: monitoring media and supporting the section's media engagement activities; designing and developing social media content, including GIFs, animations, graphics, and video content tailored to key audiences; supporting content creation ideas that combat misinformation and disinformation, explain UNSMIL's mandate, and promote civic education regarding the political process; translating content into Arabic or English; and producing daily headline readouts and media monitoring analysis. The role requires creativity and the ability to plan and organize effectively, ensuring that all communications materials are professional and resonate with the intended audience.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong creative skills, excellent planning and organizing abilities, and a high level of professionalism in their communications. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record in media monitoring and content creation, particularly in a political or humanitarian context. Familiarity with social media platforms and digital outreach strategies is essential, as is the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences. Strong analytical skills are also required to assess media coverage and develop strategic communications responses.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is required for this position. Additional training or certifications in digital media, social media management, or public information would be advantageous and enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or media engagement, preferably within an international organization or a similar context. Experience working in Libya or understanding the Libyan political landscape would be a significant asset, as it would enable the Communications Assistant to navigate the complexities of the local environment effectively.

Languages:
An excellent command of Arabic is mandatory for this position, as the role involves significant content creation and translation tasks. Proficiency in English is also required, as the candidate will need to translate materials between Arabic and English. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Libya or the region would be considered a plus, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader audience.

Additional Notes:
The position is based in Tripoli, Libya, and is classified as a UN Volunteer role. The contract includes various entitlements such as a pre-assignment entry lump sum, relocation costs, a volunteer living allowance, access to learning and career development resources, annual leave, comprehensive insurance coverage, and a danger and hardship differential. The exit lump sum is also provided for each month served upon successful completion of the contract. This role is full-time and requires a commitment to supporting the UN's mission in Libya.
