Job Overview:
This online volunteering assignment is focused on a specific public communication project that aims to present selected aspects of the UNMISS Human Rights Division's work in a clearer, more accessible, and professional format for external audiences, particularly through LinkedIn. The role involves creating a public communication package that will enhance public understanding of the Division's work. Volunteers will not engage in human rights investigations or management of official accounts but will instead focus on adapting existing reports and findings into professional communication materials suitable for LinkedIn. The project is designed to produce defined outputs rather than ongoing communication support, making it a targeted and impactful assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteers will work under the supervision of the Information Management Officer and in coordination with relevant colleagues from the Front Office of the Director. Their key responsibilities will include:
  • Developing a project concept note that outlines the communication theme, target audience, tone, key messages, structure, and timeline.
  • Creating a structured content plan that details proposed topics, key messages, publication sequence, visual needs, and links to relevant public materials.
  • Preparing at least 12 draft LinkedIn posts that focus on selected public human rights themes and the work of the OHCHR South Sudan / UNMISS Human Rights Division.
  • Designing at least four visual communication products suitable for LinkedIn, such as infographics and quote cards, using only cleared and public information.
  • Compiling a messaging bank that includes proposed messages, captions, hashtags, and public-facing lines to support the communication package.
  • Delivering a final communication package that consolidates all draft posts, visuals, content plan, messaging bank, and a handover note explaining how the materials can be reviewed and finalized.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong communication skills, particularly in writing and editing for public audiences. A background in communications, public relations, or a related field is preferred. Familiarity with human rights issues and the ability to translate complex information into accessible formats is essential. Experience with social media platforms, especially LinkedIn, is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate creativity in visual communication and an understanding of effective messaging strategies.

Educational Background:
A degree in communications, public relations, international relations, human rights, or a related field is required. Candidates with relevant certifications or training in digital communication or social media management will be considered favorably. A strong academic background that includes coursework in human rights or international law may also be beneficial.

Experience:
While prior experience in a similar role is advantageous, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should have some experience in communications, public relations, or related fields, particularly in creating content for social media or public audiences. Experience working with international organizations or in a human rights context will be viewed positively.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communication materials will be developed in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in South Sudan, would be considered a valuable asset but is not required for this position.

Additional Notes:
This is an online volunteering position, which means it can be performed remotely. The duration of the assignment is not specified, but it is project-based with defined outputs. The role is suitable for individuals looking to gain experience in public communication within an international organization. Volunteers may have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful human rights advocacy while enhancing their skills in communication and public engagement.
