Job Overview:
The Health, Safety and Environment Engineer will join the Safety Office team within the Experimental Physics Department at CERN. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with CERN Safety Rules and best practices across various installations, activities, and projects. The engineer will be responsible for conducting risk assessments, recommending control measures, and monitoring their implementation to enhance safety standards. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to promote a proactive safety culture and ensure that safety documentation is maintained and updated. The engineer will also analyze occupational incidents and prepare reports to follow up on corrective actions, thereby playing a vital role in maintaining a safe working environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Health, Safety and Environment Engineer include:
  • Conducting thorough risk assessments for installations and activities, identifying potential hazards, and recommending appropriate control measures.
  • Performing and coordinating safety inspections in collaboration with subject matter experts to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Supporting responsible teams in the preparation, review, and maintenance of safety documentation, including technical descriptions and operational procedures.
  • Providing clear guidance and actionable advice to stakeholders on safety-related matters to foster a culture of safety awareness.
  • Organizing and contributing to regular safety meetings, collaborating with safety officers, technical experts, and other stakeholders to discuss safety issues and improvements.
  • Analyzing occupational incidents, preparing detailed reports, and ensuring the implementation of corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Promoting a proactive and sustainable safety culture through stakeholder engagement and safety awareness initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD, or equivalent relevant experience in Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have demonstrated experience in safety management and risk assessment within complex technical environments, such as research facilities or large-scale engineering projects. A solid understanding of safety principles, risk analysis methods, and the implementation of control measures is essential. The ability to analyze complex technical situations and provide practical, solution-oriented advice is crucial for success in this role. Experience in conducting inspections and incident analyses, along with knowledge of electrical or chemical safety, would be advantageous.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. A strong foundation in safety management principles and risk assessment methodologies is essential, as well as familiarity with technical documentation and safety regulations.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite position thereafter. The role requires a commitment to working 40 hours per week in a hybrid work environment. Candidates must be prepared for work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. A valid driving license is necessary, and candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position.
