Job Overview:
As a Chemical Safety Engineer at CERN, you will play a crucial role within the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department, specifically in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group. Your primary responsibility will be to provide expert advice and support in the Chemical Safety domain, ensuring compliance with safety policies and regulations. You will be involved in risk assessments, safety verifications, and the development of safety documentation. This position requires a proactive approach to enhancing safety standards and fostering a culture of safety within the organization. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of safety experts, contributing to the continuous improvement of a safe working environment at CERN.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide expert advice and support in the Chemical Safety domain, including conducting risk assessments.
• Perform safety verifications on installations and activities to ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Assist in defining requirements for the compliant transport of dangerous goods.
• Support safety audits, technical reviews, and various projects related to chemical safety.
• Ensure conformity to safety requirements in engineering and tendering specifications.
• Write and maintain CERN Safety documentation, including rules, instructions, and guidelines.
• Design and deliver safety training in collaboration with the CERN Safety Training service.
• Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on chemical safety regulations and best practices.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field. Additionally, applicants should have demonstrated experience in managing chemical safety engineering aspects of large-scale industrial facilities or projects. A strong understanding of chemical and biological hazards, including the transport of dangerous goods, is essential. Knowledge of relevant European regulations or equivalent national standards in the chemical safety domain is also required.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field is mandatory for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. Continuous learning and professional development in the field of chemical safety are encouraged to maintain expertise.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in the field of chemical safety engineering, particularly in managing safety aspects of large-scale industrial projects. Experience in providing advice and support on chemical and biological hazards is crucial, as well as familiarity with the transport of dangerous goods. A proven track record in occupational safety and risk management is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being essential. Proficiency in both languages will enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse workforce at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with hybrid work flexibility. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is required, and the role may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is HSE-OHS-GI-2026-160-LD.
