Job Overview:
The Experimental Physicist position is situated within the Experimental Physics (EP) Department at CERN, which is dedicated to conducting basic research in particle physics. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Experimental Physicist include:
  • Contributing to particle physics experiment projects at CERN, ensuring that all aspects of the experiments are executed effectively.
  • Participating in the design and development of experiments and detectors, which involves working closely with other physicists and engineers to create cutting-edge technology.
  • Supporting the operation and performance of detector systems, which includes troubleshooting and optimizing the functionality of these systems during experiments.
  • Analyzing experimental data to extract meaningful results and contribute to the overall physics findings of the projects.
  • Collaborating with international teams, sharing knowledge and results, and documenting findings in a clear and comprehensive manner.
  • Engaging in continuous learning and staying updated with developments in the field of experimental particle physics.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics or a related field. Additionally, they should have demonstrated competence in experimental particle physics, particularly in data analysis and online/offline software. Familiarity with detector hardware and experimental instrumentation is essential. The ideal candidate will also have a strong foundation in the principles of electromagnetic radiation propagation and its interaction with matter, as well as experience with particle detectors and the interactions of particles with matter.

Educational Background:
A PhD in Physics or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates should have a strong academic background that includes extensive knowledge of experimental techniques and theoretical principles relevant to particle physics. Additional certifications or training in specialized areas of experimental physics may be advantageous.

Experience:
The position is aimed at candidates who are at the beginning of their careers but have already demonstrated some years of post-doctoral experience in experimental particle physics. This experience should include practical involvement in data analysis and familiarity with the software tools used in the field. Candidates should also have a proven track record of working with detector hardware and experimental instrumentation, showcasing their ability to contribute effectively to research projects.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, as it is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.

Additional Notes:
The position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role may require work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and occasional work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, depending on the needs of the organization. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is EP-DI-2026-29-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
