Job Overview:
The Environmental Goods Data Expert will play a crucial role in the closeout and legacy phase of the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme. This position requires the delivery of robust, reusable, and policy-relevant data, dashboards, analytical products, and knowledge-management workflows. The expert will enhance UNCTAD's capacity to synthesize evidence from the SMEP Programme, support donor engagement, and improve the quality and accessibility of environmental goods and services trade databases. The role also involves developing bridge activities for follow-on funding opportunities and supporting AI-enabled internal innovation in a secure and responsible manner. The expert will be expected to produce data-driven cases, visualizations, factsheets, presentations, dashboards, and targeted studies that synthesize SMEP results and lessons learned, thereby contributing to the overall impact of the programme.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Goods Data Expert include:

• Supporting the SMEP Programme closeout stage by producing various data-driven outputs such as visualizations, factsheets, presentations, dashboards, and knowledge products that synthesize results and lessons learned.
• Developing and maintaining trade-monitor dashboards for key environmental goods and services sectors, including second-hand clothes, oceans goods, seaweed products, biostimulants, and non-plastic substitutes.
• Compiling, cleaning, documenting, and analyzing trade, tariff, non-tariff measure, and market data relevant to environmental goods and services.
• Collaborating with UNCTAD Statistics and other teams to develop and document environmental goods and services datasets and databases.
• Supporting bridge activities between the SMEP Programme and proposed GEF-9 Sustainable Materials Trade Programme, including data analysis and inputs to concept notes.
• Engaging in knowledge extraction from SMEP reports and related databases to identify lessons, policy recommendations, and scaling opportunities.
• Contributing to UNCTAD's internal processes through the AI incubator, particularly in prototyping workflows for document analysis and dashboard preparation.
• Assisting in the preparation of funding proposals, project concepts, donor updates, and technical briefs based on SMEP results.
• Participating in meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement as requested by responsible officers.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires an advanced university degree (Master's) in economics, international trade, statistics, data science, environmental sciences, sustainable development, public policy, business, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Candidates must have at least 3 years of progressively responsible work experience in international trade, data analysis, data visualization, or related areas. Experience with AI-enabled knowledge-management workflows and local large-language models is also required. Familiarity with trade and environment issues, environmental goods and services, and sustainable materials is desirable, as is experience with trade datasets and classifications, statistical programming, and dashboard development.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's) in a relevant field such as economics, international trade, statistics, data science, environmental sciences, sustainable development, public policy, or business. A first-level university degree may be accepted in combination with additional qualifying experience, demonstrating the candidate's capability to perform the required tasks effectively.

Experience:
The position requires at least 3 years of progressively responsible work experience in areas such as international trade, data analysis, data visualization, or financial statistics. Candidates should have experience with AI-enabled knowledge-management workflows and familiarity with trade and environment issues. Experience working with trade datasets and classifications, as well as statistical programming and dashboard development, is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is the primary language of communication within the organization.
