Job Overview: The Driver position is located in the Resident Coordinator's Office in Chad and reports directly to the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office/Team Leader. The primary function of this role is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel, as well as the delivery of documents and goods between the UN office and various institutions such as ministries and embassies. The Driver is expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism while dealing with officials and visitors, ensuring that all driving and logistical tasks are performed with diligence and care. This role also involves minor vehicle maintenance and record-keeping related to vehicle usage, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and organizational policies. The Driver must demonstrate good judgment and adaptability in various situations, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the UN's operations in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
Safely driving vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and, when applicable, for the transport of general cargo and specialized hazardous goods.
Making regular deliveries of parcels, documents, and other items between the UN office and external offices or institutions.
Conducting minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers as requested.
Facilitating customs and immigration formalities for official personnel at the airport.
Maintaining effective and tactful communication with officials and visitors.
Performing day-to-day maintenance of assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires, and arranging for repairs as necessary.
Logging official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
Ensuring compliance with rules and regulations in the event of an accident.
Applying good judgment in the context of assigned tasks. 1
Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid National Driver's License and demonstrate a safe driving record. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and a relevant first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience. Additionally, a valid basic life support (BLS) certificate or equivalent is desirable. Candidates should have a strong understanding of driving rules and regulations, as well as knowledge of the local area, road conditions, and safety awareness. Professionalism, planning and organizing skills, and a client-oriented approach are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. However, candidates with a relevant first-level university degree may be considered if they lack the required experience. This educational background ensures that candidates have the foundational knowledge necessary for the responsibilities of the Driver role.
Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience as a driver, demonstrating a safe driving record. Experience in operating a variety of vehicle makes and models, including vans and other motorized vehicles, is essential. Previous experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations is highly desirable, as it indicates familiarity with the operational standards and expectations of the UN.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in French is required at UN Level II, which includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of Arabic is considered desirable, and candidates with proficiency in Arabic will have an advantage in the selection process.
Additional Notes: This is a Fixed Term position, initially open for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds and budgetary approval. The appointment is on a local basis, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Chad. Candidates selected from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses.
