Job Overview:
The Driver position at WFP is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel and commodities. This role involves not only driving but also providing basic assistance with local language translation, facilitating smooth entry and arrival for personnel at various entry points, and maintaining the vehicle in optimal condition. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Provide safe transportation for authorized personnel, ensuring adherence to UN safety and security rules.
  • Assist with basic translation of conversations from/to the local language as needed.
  • Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport or other entry points, assisting with visa and customs formalities.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle log books and report daily on the mechanical status of the vehicle.
  • Ensure the assigned vehicle is kept clean, well-maintained, and equipped with necessary travel authorizations and supplies.
  • Report any mechanical issues to the supervisor promptly.
  • Follow established rules for field deliveries and report any accidents or issues immediately.
  • Perform basic office-related tasks such as filing, photocopying, and maintaining stores when required.
  • Deliver and collect various items, manage mailing services, and pay office bills as needed to support administrative functions.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and certification to operate assigned vehicles in accordance with local regulations. A strong understanding of driving rules, chauffeur protocol, and local road conditions is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a high level of responsibility, courtesy, and tact in their interactions with clients and colleagues. Knowledge of safety standards and equipment is also required, along with the ability to read and interpret safety documents and maintenance instructions. Basic skills in first aid and emergency assistance are desirable, as well as proficiency in using communication devices such as radios and telephones.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is the completion of secondary school education. Candidates must have formal driver training and certification to operate the assigned vehicle, ensuring compliance with local driving regulations. This educational background is essential to ensure that the Driver is well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least two years of work experience as a Driver, preferably within an international organization, embassy, or the UN system. A demonstrated safe driving record is crucial, along with experience in operating a variety of vehicles, including vans and trucks. Experience in defensive driving is considered an asset, as it enhances the Driver's ability to navigate challenging driving conditions safely and effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic (level C) is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in English and French is desirable, as it facilitates communication with a diverse range of personnel and enhances the Driver's ability to perform their duties effectively in a multicultural environment.
