Job Overview:
The National United Nations Volunteer (UNV) position is integral to the World Food Programme's efforts in Tanzania, particularly under the Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2022-202
  • This role focuses on supporting smallholder farmers in achieving climate-resilient livelihoods and improving food security and nutrition. The UNV will work closely with WFP’s cooperating partners to provide technical assistance, knowledge transfer, and training to farmers on sustainable agricultural practices. The position requires frequent travel to various districts, and candidates should be residents of the specified locations to ensure effective community engagement and support. The UNV will report to the Programme Policy Officer and will be involved in various activities aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and market access for smallholder farmers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNV will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting WFP’s cooperating partners in collecting seasonal crop data on production, income, and best practices.
  • Assisting in delivering training activities on sustainable agronomic approaches to help close the yield gap on farms.
  • Providing field-level support to farmers and cooperating partners to enhance access to agricultural inputs and services.
  • Documenting field experiences and trends to inform program development.
  • Supporting farmers during training activities on crop protection and farm management.
  • Collaborating with technical staff to establish and monitor technology demonstration sites and training platforms.
  • Coordinating with value chain actors to address youth agribusiness-related constraints.
  • Conducting regular field monitoring activities and collecting data to support program tracking and learning.
  • Promoting gender equity, youth inclusion, and environmental safeguards in all activities. 1
  • Reviewing partner reports for consistency and quality assurance. 1
  • Performing any other tasks as required by the supervisor and activity manager.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, integrity, and accountability. They should demonstrate respect for communities and local cultures, and have the ability to engage and mobilize communities effectively. Teamwork and collaboration are essential, along with cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity. Problem-solving skills and adaptability are also important, as the role requires working with minimal supervision in dynamic environments.

Educational Background:
A background in agriculture, agronomy, environmental science, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of sustainable agricultural practices and food systems, as well as knowledge of local farming communities and challenges.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant experience in agricultural development, community engagement, or related fields. Experience working with smallholder farmers and knowledge of local agricultural practices will be advantageous. Familiarity with data collection and monitoring processes in agricultural contexts is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of local languages spoken in the regions of operation is highly desirable to facilitate effective communication with farmers and community members.
