The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Abuja is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) managed by the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC). Established to serve as the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Nigeria, UNIC Abuja collaborates closely with various stakeholders including the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), UN agencies, media organizations, civil society, educational institutions, youth networks, and digital communities. The mission of UNIC Abuja is to promote awareness and understanding of the work and priorities of the United Nations, thereby enhancing the visibility and impact of UN initiatives in Nigeria.

Job Overview:
The Social Media Intern at UNIC Abuja will play a crucial role in supporting the digital communications and public outreach efforts of the Centre. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to gain practical experience in strategic communications within the United Nations system. The intern will be involved in creating engaging content for various social media platforms, supporting campaigns focused on sustainable development, peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, climate action, gender equality, human rights, and youth engagement. The internship is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience, allowing the intern to develop skills in multimedia storytelling, audience engagement, and digital analytics while gaining exposure to the broader UN communications network.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Digital Communications Assistant (DCA). Key responsibilities include:
  • Social Media Content Creation and Management (40%): Drafting, editing, and publishing content for UNIC Abuja's social media platforms; producing multimedia content such as videos, graphics, and infographics; localizing global UN campaigns for Nigerian audiences; monitoring social media trends; maintaining a content calendar; ensuring content aligns with UN values and standards.
  • Digital Engagement and Community Management (25%): Supporting online engagement with various audiences; monitoring comments and discussions; identifying opportunities for digital campaigns; supporting live coverage of UN events; amplifying content from UN agencies.
  • Research, Analytics and Monitoring (20%): Conducting research on digital media trends; tracking analytics and preparing reports; monitoring misinformation trends; contributing ideas for improving outreach.
  • Administrative and Communication Support (15%): Organizing digital campaigns and public information events; drafting newsletters and promotional materials; maintaining digital archives; performing other communication-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school programme, be in the final academic year of a first university degree programme, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme. Additionally, experience in social media management, multimedia content creation, journalism, communications, or marketing" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">digital marketing is desirable. Familiarity with graphic design and video editing tools is an advantage, along with a demonstrated interest in international affairs and sustainable development.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes enrollment in a graduate programme or being in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in fields such as Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Digital Marketing, or Public Relations. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of digital communications and the UN's mission.

Experience:
While no prior working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme, candidates should possess relevant skills and knowledge that can benefit the UN during their internship. This includes familiarity with social media platforms, digital engagement practices, and an understanding of Nigeria's digital media ecosystem.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of any Nigerian or UN official language is considered desirable, enhancing the intern's ability to engage with diverse audiences.

Additional Notes:
The internship is a full-time, in-person position based in Abuja, with an expected duration of three months, potentially extendable to six months based on organizational needs and intern availability. It is important to note that interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Additionally, candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of Nigeria may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
