Job Overview:
The Senior Driver position is crucial for the effective operation of the UNHCR office in Zarzis. The primary responsibility of the Senior Driver is to provide safe and reliable transportation for the Head of Office and other high-ranking officials. In addition to driving, the Senior Driver is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the assigned UNHCR vehicle(s), ensuring they are in optimal condition and compliant with safety standards. The position may also involve performing minor vehicle repairs and providing clerical support as needed. The Senior Driver will interact regularly with UNHCR staff and external partners, requiring a professional demeanor and the ability to communicate effectively. The role is essential for facilitating the smooth operation of the office and supporting the mission of UNHCR in providing assistance to those in need.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Drive UNHCR vehicles primarily for the Head of Office and other high-ranking officials.
  • Transport authorized passengers, deliver and collect documents, and handle other items as required.
  • Meet official personnel at airports or other locations and assist with immigration and customs formalities.
  • Conduct daily maintenance checks on assigned vehicles, including oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and meet security standards.
  • Perform minor repairs and arrange for major repairs as necessary, while keeping the vehicle clean and well-maintained.
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities, preparing reports as required.
  • Ensure valid documentation for passengers and cargo in the vehicle.
  • Provide basic interpretation services in the absence of an interpreter.
  • Identify and manage risks associated with driving and office operations, raising concerns to supervisors as needed. 1
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid driving license and have knowledge of driving rules and regulations. Essential functional skills include basic vehicle mechanical skills and a commitment to safety and security protocols. The ability to communicate effectively and maintain a professional demeanor is also required. Candidates should demonstrate a proactive approach to risk management and be willing to support the overall objectives of the UNHCR office.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is the completion of Primary Education or a High School Diploma. Candidates with higher educational qualifications are encouraged to apply, although not mandatory. Relevant certifications, such as a Driving License and an Auto Mechanics Certificate, are essential for this role.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a driving role, preferably within an international organization or similar environment. Experience in vehicle maintenance and knowledge of local driving regulations are highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operational protocols will be an advantage.

Languages:
For this position, knowledge of English is mandatory, along with proficiency in the UN working language of the duty station, which is Arabic in this case. Knowledge of local languages is considered an asset and may enhance communication with local partners and authorities.
