Job Overview:
The National UN Associate Volunteer position is focused on providing communications support to the South-South and triangular cooperation (SSTC) component of UNFPA's Country Programme in China. This role is crucial in advancing sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and population data in the country. The volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the UNFPA China Specialist of Partnership & South-South Cooperation, engaging in various tasks that include planning and implementing media and communication events, creating communication products, and supporting knowledge development and documentation management for Global Development Fund (GDF) projects. The position emphasizes the importance of digital communications and outreach to various stakeholders, including the private sector and philanthropic institutions. The volunteer will also contribute to the documentation of best practices and lessons learned from UNFPA’s programmes, ensuring effective communication and advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Media and Communications Support: Plan and implement UNFPA SSTC media and communication events and activities, focusing on digital communications. Create communication products for SSTC activities/achievements, including posters, slides, and media posts. Design visual communication products for online and offline use, such as posters, invitations, social media cards, and short videos.
  • Knowledge Development and Documentation Management Support for GDF Projects: Develop strategies for media engagement. Prepare and maintain bilingual materials (English and Chinese), including press releases, speeches, statements, policy briefs, and presentations. Collaborate with communications and programme teams to analyze and synthesize relevant information, contributing to knowledge products in UNFPA’s thematic areas. Document best practices and lessons learned from UNFPA’s programmes for internal and external learning. Prepare evidence-based fact sheets, issue briefs, policy notes, and investment case briefs. Provide language support for the translation and editing of GDF project reports and other communication materials. Monitor quarterly and annual communication activities in progress reports. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Additionally, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through community engagement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a demonstrated understanding of operations relevant to UNFPA, with technical capabilities or knowledge that is relevant or transferable to UNFPA procedures and rules. They should exhibit discretion, political sensitivity, diplomacy, and tact in dealing with clients, and possess the ability to apply good judgment and liaise with a range of different actors, especially in senior positions. A high degree of autonomy, personal initiative, and resourcefulness is expected, along with the willingness to accept wide responsibilities and the ability to work independently under established procedures. Candidates should also be responsive and client-oriented, demonstrating integrity and ethical standards in their daily activities.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position. Candidates should ideally have a degree in communications, public relations, international relations, or a related field. A strong foundation in media and communication strategies, as well as knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues, is highly beneficial.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in media and communications, particularly in a development or humanitarian context. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or governmental agencies is advantageous. Familiarity with digital communication tools and strategies is also important, as well as experience in producing communication materials and managing events.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and Chinese is mandatory for this position, as the role involves preparing bilingual materials and engaging with diverse stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly in the context of communication with local communities and partners.

Additional Notes:
This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Beijing, China. The volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and other living essentials. The position is part of the malicious insurance plan for national UN Volunteers. Living conditions in Beijing include access to modest public infrastructure and health services, with a high cost of living in central areas.
