UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnerships in environmental stewardship, aiming to inspire and enable nations and peoples to enhance their quality of life while ensuring that future generations can also thrive. The organization operates globally, advocating for sustainable development and the coherent implementation of environmental policies within the United Nations system. UNEP is involved in various initiatives, including the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention, which is a legally binding agreement signed by all five Caspian littoral states. The Secretariat of the Tehran Convention is currently engaged in three major projects: the Russian ODA Project on Marine Litter, the Adaptation Fund Project, and the Global Environment Facility Project, focusing on environmental protection and sustainable development in the Caspian Sea region.
Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position is situated within the Secretariat of the Tehran Convention, which aims to protect the marine environment of the Caspian Sea. The volunteer will work under the supervision of the Tehran Convention Officer and will be tasked with developing a comprehensive visual suite for three significant projects. The role requires the creation of a cohesive brand identity for each project, ensuring that the visual materials are appealing and suitable for both high-level delegates and digital audiences. The volunteer will be responsible for translating complex environmental data into minimalist designs that effectively communicate the essence of each project. This position is crucial for enhancing the visibility and impact of the initiatives undertaken by the Secretariat, as well as for promoting awareness and understanding of environmental issues in the Caspian Sea region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
Designing high-resolution, minimalist pull-up banners for physical display at relevant events, ensuring that they effectively convey the project's message.
Creating 2-page, 'magazine-style' executive summary factsheets for each project, available in both English and Russian, optimized for high-quality printing and digital distribution.
Producing a series of digital 'Fast Facts' grid tiles, which are square graphic tiles intended for use on the official website and social media platforms, aimed at engaging a broader audience.
Designing premium, artistic infographic postcards that summarize the key achievements of each project, making the information accessible and visually appealing to stakeholders and the public.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess a strong background in graphic design, with proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). They should have a keen eye for aesthetics and the ability to create minimalist designs that effectively communicate complex information. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while adhering to deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential, as the volunteer will need to collaborate with the Tehran Convention Officer and other team members.
Educational Background: A degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of design principles and experience in creating promotional materials. A portfolio showcasing previous design work is highly desirable, as it will provide insight into the candidate's style and capabilities.
Experience: While prior experience in a similar role is beneficial, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should have a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality design work, whether through academic projects, internships, or freelance work. Experience working with international organizations or on environmental issues will be considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Russian is highly desirable, as the materials will be produced in both languages. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered a plus, particularly if they are relevant to the Caspian Sea region.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be part-time, with flexible hours to accommodate the volunteer's schedule. The position may involve remote work, allowing for international applicants to participate. The duration of the volunteer engagement will be determined based on project needs and the availability of the volunteer.
