The organization has been operational in Cambodia since 1979, focusing on supporting the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, to access nutritious food. The current WFP Cambodia Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2024-2028 aims to complement the Royal Government of Cambodia’s efforts to achieve zero hunger through an integrated approach that includes nutrition, social protection, food systems, and disaster risk management. WFP's work in Cambodia is characterized by three critical approaches: social behaviour change, systems strengthening, and evidence generation, which guide its interventions and partnerships across various sectors.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position is designed to support the WFP Cambodia Country Office in enhancing evidence-based advocacy, donor visibility, and stakeholder engagement. The volunteer will be responsible for producing high-quality country briefs and programmatic updates on technical assistance (TA) activities, supporting advocacy and visibility at events and through digital channels, developing human interest stories that illustrate the impact of WFP's work, and exploring private sector partnership opportunities to diversify funding and accelerate results. This role is crucial in communicating the outcomes of WFP's initiatives and ensuring that the organization's efforts are effectively showcased to various stakeholders, including government entities, donors, and partners. The volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Country Director and will engage with multiple teams to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content produced.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
Content Development (≈40%): Drafting, editing, and laying out country briefs, thematic notes, and programmatic updates that summarize TA activities, results, lessons learned, and next steps tailored for government, donors, and partners. Coordinating inputs with Programme, Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E), and field teams to ensure accuracy and inclusion of disaggregated data. Maintaining a repository of core facts, figures, photos, and approved language.
Advocacy & Visibility (≈25%): Preparing talking points, slide decks, and event one-pagers for leadership participation in national forums and technical working groups. Supporting event logistics and capturing key moments for post-event highlights. Coordinating with UN Communications Group and government counterparts for alignment with national messaging.
Human Interest & Field Storytelling (≈20%): Planning and producing human interest stories and short photo essays that illustrate how TA translates into outcomes for beneficiaries. Collecting quotes, case studies, and basic monitoring data to contextualize stories. Adapting content for web and social media.
Partnerships & Private Sector Scoping (≈10%): Mapping potential private sector partners and identifying value propositions linked to programme outcomes. Drafting short concept notes or partnership briefs with clear problem statements and proposed collaboration models.
Knowledge & Quality Assurance (≈5%): Ensuring all outputs meet branding, style, accessibility, and safeguarding standards. Contributing to quarterly communications/editorial calendars and lessons learned notes. Ensuring stakeholder satisfaction through feedback forms.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise documents tailored to various audiences. Proficiency in using digital tools for content creation and dissemination is essential. Familiarity with the humanitarian sector, particularly in relation to food security and nutrition, is highly desirable. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage with diverse stakeholders is crucial. Candidates should demonstrate adaptability, creativity, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in their work.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in relevant areas may be an advantage. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the principles of humanitarian assistance and development, particularly in the context of food security and nutrition.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in communications, advocacy, or a related field, preferably within the humanitarian or development sectors. Experience in content development, stakeholder engagement, and partnership building is highly valued. Familiarity with the Cambodian context and previous work with UN agencies or NGOs would be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UN. Knowledge of Khmer or other local languages is considered an asset and would enhance communication with local stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time UN Volunteer role based in Cambodia, specifically in Phnom Penh. The living conditions in Cambodia are tropical and monsoonal, with a rainy season from May to October and a hot, dry season from November to April. The UN Volunteer is expected to adhere to UN residential security requirements when choosing accommodation. Daily transportation options include taxis and tuk-tuks, and some volunteers may opt to purchase their own transportation. Health precautions are necessary due to common tropical diseases, and recommended vaccinations include those against typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, and Japanese Encephalitis. Medical facilities are adequate for routine care, but serious cases may require evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore.
