Job Posting Organization: The ICT and Development Section (IDS) is part of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The mission of IDS is to bridge the digital divide and accelerate digital transformation across the Asia-Pacific region. The organization focuses on promoting regional digital connectivity, the adoption of innovative technologies, and the strategic use of digital data. ESCAP was established in 1947 and operates in multiple countries across the Asia-Pacific region, working towards sustainable development and regional cooperation.
Job Overview: The internship at the ICT and Development Section is designed for individuals who are looking to gain practical experience in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) and its role in sustainable development. Interns will work full-time for a duration ranging from two to six months, under the supervision of a staff member. The role involves engaging in various tasks that align with the intern's academic background and the current priorities of the Section. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to significant publications, assist in data analysis, support project implementation, and engage in event coordination, all while gaining insights into the workings of the United Nations and its initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks, including:
Analytical Research: Assisting with research on ICT and digital agendas for sustainable development, contributing to flagship publications like the Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report.
Data Analysis: Compiling and processing socio-economic data related to ICT development, particularly focusing on countries with special situations such as LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS.
Programme & Project Support: Assisting officers in implementing regional projects aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure and data usage.
Website & Communications: Supporting the maintenance and promotion of Section activities on the ESCAP website.
Event Coordination: Providing logistical and substantive support for intergovernmental meetings and regional workshops, including drafting concept notes and coordinating with participants.
Administrative Support: Performing other substantive and administrative duties as requested by the Chief of Section or Division leadership.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Additionally, applicants are not required to have significant work experience, but it is recommended that they possess ICT knowledge in standard software applications. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential, as well as the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme or being in the final academic year of a first university degree programme. This indicates that candidates should have a strong academic foundation, preferably in fields related to information technology, communications, international relations, or sustainable development.
Experience: While significant work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates are encouraged to have some familiarity with ICT and standard software applications. The internship is designed to provide practical experience, so a willingness to learn and engage with the work of the United Nations is crucial.
Languages: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, Chinese, or Russian, is considered an advantage, enhancing the intern's ability to communicate in a multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a transparent and fair selection process.
