Job Overview: The UNV Energy Specialist position is part of UNDP Jordan’s Climate and Energy Portfolio, which is designed to support national efforts in advancing sustainable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development pathways. This role aligns with Jordan’s Vision for Economic Modernization, the National Climate Change Policy (2022–2050), the Jordan Energy Strategy Action Plan (2020 – 2030), and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The UNV Energy Specialist will play a crucial role in addressing ongoing energy supply challenges and increasing demand pressures by contributing to energy diversification, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing the resilience of energy systems. The position involves supporting various initiatives such as the Sustainable Energy Investment Accelerator (SEIA) and the Energy Efficiency Revolving Fund (EERF), among others. The specialist will also be responsible for developing investment-ready project pipelines and promoting integrated solutions that link energy, climate, and economic development priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UNV Energy Specialist will perform a variety of functions under the direct supervision of the Team Leader of the Climate and Energy Portfolio. Key responsibilities include conducting mapping and assessment of energy demand and consumption patterns, providing technical support for energy transition and efficiency initiatives, and developing investment-ready energy project pipelines. The specialist will also contribute to policy analysis and advisory on energy transition pathways, support the design and implementation of climate finance initiatives, facilitate coordination with national stakeholders, and assist in monitoring and reporting project activities. Additionally, the role involves promoting gender equality and social inclusion in energy programming and engaging in volunteerism initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the UNV Energy Specialist position should possess a strong background in energy systems, climate change, and sustainable development. They should have a solid understanding of energy policies and frameworks, as well as experience in project management and stakeholder engagement. The ideal candidate will demonstrate adaptability, creativity, and strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment. Knowledge of climate finance mechanisms and experience in developing investment-ready projects will be advantageous.
Educational Background: A relevant educational background is essential for the UNV Energy Specialist position. Candidates should hold at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as environmental science, energy management, engineering, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees or specialized training in energy systems, climate change, or sustainable development will be considered an asset.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in energy systems, climate change, or sustainable development. Experience working with governmental or international organizations, particularly in the context of energy transition and climate finance, is highly desirable. Familiarity with project management and stakeholder coordination is also important for this role.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory, as it is the official language of Jordan. Proficiency in English is also essential, as it is widely spoken and used in professional settings. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly in enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Amman, Jordan. The UN Volunteer will receive a Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of JOD 1,145.08, along with annual and learning leaves, free medical and life insurance, and access to various learning platforms. The living conditions in Amman are generally favorable, with a peaceful environment and good access to services. However, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials.
