Job Overview: The consultant will provide technical expertise and capacity-building support to government institutions in South Africa, specifically focusing on gender-responsive migration governance. The role involves designing and delivering training sessions aimed at enhancing the understanding of the gendered nature of migration and equipping officials with practical tools to integrate gender considerations into migration policies and services. The consultant will work closely with government officials in Gauteng and Western Cape to address the specific needs and barriers faced by migrant women, particularly in relation to gender-based violence and labor migration. The overarching goal is to strengthen institutional capacity and improve service delivery for migrant women and girls, ensuring their rights are protected and promoted throughout the migration process.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant is expected to undertake several key tasks, including:
Designing and delivering training workshops for government institutions in Gauteng and Western Cape, preparing comprehensive training materials such as concept notes, agendas, presentations, and evaluation forms.
Facilitating interactive training sessions that engage participants in group work and discussions.
Developing practical tools and guidelines to assist DHA officials in implementing gender-responsive services.
Providing tailored technical assistance and ongoing support to enhance gender mainstreaming in DHA policies and practices.
Preparing and submitting concise training reports that summarize key outcomes and recommendations following each training session.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in gender studies, migration studies, public policy, social sciences, human rights, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A project or programme management certification is considered an added advantage. The consultant should demonstrate strong analytical skills, excellent facilitation abilities, and effective communication skills, with a proven track record in gender equality and migration governance.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as gender studies, migration studies, public policy, social sciences, or human rights is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. A project management certification is a plus, indicating a well-rounded educational background suitable for the consultancy role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 7 years of experience working on issues related to gender equality, women’s rights, gender-based violence, and migration governance. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in designing and delivering training related to gender and migration, as well as familiarity with participatory methodologies. Strong experience in developing capacity-building materials and tools is essential, along with knowledge of international frameworks on gender and migration.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be beneficial but is not explicitly required.
Additional Notes: The consultancy will be home-based with travel to Gauteng and Western Cape provinces. The assignment is expected to last for a total of 50.5 days over a six-month period. The consultant will be compensated according to UN Women’s duty travel policy for any official trips.
