The position is located within the Evaluation Team of the Office of the Director in the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at the United Nations. Job Overview:
The Associate Political Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in analyzing information related to political issues that may affect peacekeeping operations. This position requires the incumbent to maintain an up-to-date understanding of political trends and events, support the implementation of the Comprehensive Planning and Performance Assessment System (CPAS), and assist senior officials with briefing materials. The role involves preparing summaries, monitoring developments in assigned areas, and providing input into various political and humanitarian efforts. The officer will also create databases to track project progress and support the Chief of the Evaluation Team in analyzing CPAS data to identify policy gaps affecting mandate delivery. This position is essential for ensuring that peacekeeping missions are informed by accurate data and analysis, ultimately contributing to the effectiveness of the UN's peacekeeping efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Political Affairs Officer include:
  • Analyzing information from various sources, including press communications and publications, to assess political trends.
  • Maintaining knowledge of events that may impact peacekeeping operations.
  • Supporting the implementation of CPAS in peacekeeping missions.
  • Assisting senior officials with the preparation of briefing notes, background papers, and talking points.
  • Summarizing articles and drafting correspondence and reports.
  • Monitoring political, socio-economic, and other relevant developments in assigned areas.
  • Providing input into political, humanitarian, and economic programs.
  • Creating and maintaining databases to track project progress.
  • Supporting the Chief of the Evaluation Team in analyzing CPAS data to identify policy gaps. 1
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of political science, international relations, or related fields. Educational Background:

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or evaluation of organizational performance is required. Candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE), or the G to P Examination (G to P) are exempt from this experience requirement. Desirable experience includes proficiency with MS Office 365, data visualization tools, and delivering training on performance assessment methodologies.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered a desirable language, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II. Proficiency in both languages will enhance communication and collaboration within the UN Secretariat.
