Job Overview:
The Communications Specialist position within the IMF's Communications Department (COM) is crucial for developing and coordinating the institution's external and internal communications strategy. This role involves shaping key messages, advising management and staff on public communications, and monitoring external perceptions of the IMF. The Strategy and Impact Division (COMSI) specifically focuses on strategic communication planning, public messaging, and assessing the impact of outreach efforts. The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting speeches, talking points, and narratives for the IMF's senior leadership, ensuring that communications align with institutional goals and resonate with diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the division’s managers, the Communications Specialist will have the following responsibilities:
  • Drafting speeches, talking points, narratives, and other materials for the IMF’s senior leadership team to effectively deliver messages at global, regional, and country levels.
  • Collaborating with management and various Fund departments to ensure institutional alignment on individual speeches and talking points.
  • Preparing tailored messaging and content for different communication channels and platforms, including blogs and op-eds.
  • Monitoring and analyzing public discourse about the IMF and its activities to inform communication strategies.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to gather insights and feedback that can enhance communication efforts.
  • Contributing to the development of communication strategies that support the IMF's mission and objectives.

Required Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications for this position include an advanced university degree (or equivalent) in Communications, International Relations, Languages, or a related field, along with a minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a university degree (or equivalent) with ten (10) years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Candidates must demonstrate excellent English writing skills, with a proven ability to create compelling speeches and narratives for diverse audiences. Additionally, candidates should have experience in converting technical work into accessible communication products and possess a good understanding of current global economic issues, as well as knowledge of the IMF’s mission and policy work.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (or equivalent) in Communications, International Relations, Languages, or a related field. A background in economics, particularly macroeconomics, is highly desirable, and practical experience in writing on topical economic issues will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience, or ten (10) years if only a university degree is held. Experience in drafting speeches, creating communication materials, and working in a fast-paced environment is essential. Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to adapt to ongoing feedback is also required.

Languages:
Excellent English writing skills are mandatory for this position. While proficiency in additional languages is not explicitly required, it may be considered an advantage, particularly if it enhances the candidate's ability to communicate with diverse audiences.

This position is a one-year contractual appointment, with the possibility of renewal for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, depending on performance, budget availability, and ongoing business needs.
