Job Overview:
The Chief of the Spanish Translation Section is responsible for overseeing the translation services from English into Spanish within the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) Bureau. This role involves leading a team of translators, ensuring high-quality and timely delivery of translation services, and managing the operational aspects of the section. The incumbent will also engage in interpretation duties as required, and will report directly to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director of LPC. The position requires a strong commitment to the ICAO Multilingualism Strategy, promoting customer-oriented services, and fostering a collaborative work environment. The Chief will develop operational plans, monitor performance, and ensure the effective management of resources to meet the demands of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead, supervise, and manage the work and staff of the Spanish Translation Section, ensuring effective service delivery and a harmonious working environment.
  • Develop operational plans and monitor their implementation, ensuring timely and accurate reporting on the Section's performance.
  • Manage the translation and revision of texts, ensuring quality control and compliance with the ICAO Multilingualism Strategy.
  • Spot-check and revise translations by other translators, ensuring accuracy and high linguistic quality.
  • Decide on outsourcing translation services and manage administrative functions to optimize productivity.
  • Act as an additional supervisor for Spanish interpreters and coordinate with other sections for resource management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall goals of the organization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced-level university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) with a focus on translation, languages, or international studies. A minimum of twelve years of progressively responsible experience in translating and revising complex texts from English to Spanish is essential. Candidates should have sound experience in planning and supervising translation services, as well as demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and technical texts. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation tools is required, and training or experience in conference interpreting is desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced-level university degree (Master’s degree or academic equivalent) is essential, preferably with an emphasis on translation, languages, or international studies. Successful completion of the United Nations exam for translators is desirable but not mandatory.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least twelve years of progressively responsible experience in translation and revision from English to Spanish, particularly with technical or legal texts. Experience in managing translation services and familiarity with CAT tools is essential. Training or experience in conference interpreting is a plus.

Languages:
A complete command of Spanish as the mother tongue or the language used for education is essential, along with excellent knowledge of English. A working knowledge of any other official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian) is desirable.

Additional Notes:
This position is fixed-term for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. ICAO staff members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their status as international civil servants.
