Job Overview:
The position of Director at the International Institute for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (IISTEM) is a pivotal role within UNESCO, aimed at leading the newly established institute dedicated to enhancing STEM education globally. The Director will be responsible for shaping the strategic direction of the institute, mobilizing resources, and leading a diverse team to achieve significant global impact in STEM education. This role requires a visionary leader who can navigate the complexities of international education systems and drive innovative approaches to learning and teaching in STEM fields. The Director will work closely with various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and researchers, to promote effective STEM education policies and practices that align with UNESCO's global education mandate. The position also involves ensuring the institute's operations are effective and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in empowering marginalized groups such as girls and women in STEM.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director will provide comprehensive leadership for IISTEM, particularly during its establishment phase. Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing and implementing the institute's strategic plan and budget, ensuring alignment with UNESCO's broader goals.
  • Leading the design and management of operational mechanisms and action plans to enhance the effectiveness of the institute's programs.
  • Fostering international cooperation in STEM education through innovative research, networking, and capacity development.
  • Collaborating closely with UNESCO's Education Sector and other relevant sectors, field offices, and specialized institutes to ensure cohesive program implementation.
  • Engaging with national authorities, UN agencies, development banks, NGOs, and academic institutions to mobilize resources and support for IISTEM's initiatives.
  • Leading, motivating, and developing a high-performing team, ensuring a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Reporting on progress and results to the Governing Board and other stakeholders, ensuring transparency and accountability in the institute's operations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s level or equivalent) in education, sciences, engineering, social sciences, or related fields. Additionally, a PhD in education or related social sciences is desirable. Candidates should have a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of education, with at least 7 years at the international level. A proven track record in advancing STEM education through research, innovation, or policy is essential, along with experience in management and developing research and training programs. Candidates should demonstrate strategic planning and change management skills, as well as experience in building strategic partnerships and mobilizing funds from diverse sources.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s level or equivalent) in relevant fields such as education, sciences, engineering, or social sciences. A PhD in education or related fields is considered an asset, as well as additional training in disciplines pertinent to the role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience, with a significant portion of that time spent in international contexts. Experience in advancing STEM education through research, policy, or innovative practices is crucial. Candidates should also have a strong background in management, particularly in developing and leading research and training programs, as well as experience in strategic planning and change management.

Languages:
Excellent knowledge and drafting skills in English are mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official UNESCO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered desirable and may enhance a candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This position is a fixed-term contract for a duration of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of 6 years. The role is classified at the D-1 level within UNESCO's grading system. The approximate annual starting salary for this position is US$ 180,350, and benefits may include 30 days of annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
