Job Overview: The Mining Specialist position at the World Bank is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a significant impact in the mining sector. The role involves contributing to the design and implementation of World Bank operations and knowledge activities, particularly supported by the Extractives Global Programmatic Support (EGPS) program. The focus will be on the metals and minerals sector, with a geographic emphasis on the Latin America and Caribbean region. The Mining Specialist will collaborate with global and regional teams to develop sector strategies, provide technical input on mining sector development, and assist in monitoring project implementation. This position is crucial for framing the World Bank's strategy in response to the evolving challenges in the mineral sector, ensuring that mining contributes to sustainable and inclusive economic development while aligning with climate mitigation goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: collaborating with WBG teams to develop sector and regional strategies; providing technical input on mining sector development issues such as data management and environmental considerations; monitoring and reporting on project implementation; conducting analytical work to inform strategic planning in mining regions; contributing to the development of national mining policies; participating in policy dialogue and reform processes; and providing technical support for investment-related initiatives. The Mining Specialist will work closely with the Metals and Minerals Solutions and Impact team to ensure alignment with departmental priorities and to support the development of bankable investment opportunities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of a master’s degree or higher in a mining-related discipline, such as Geology, Mining or Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Economics, or a related field. Additionally, at least 5 years of relevant experience in the mining sector is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of mining industry issues, project management, and data analysis. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to think independently and proactively analyze problems. Attention to detail and sound analytical skills are also critical for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field related to mining, such as Geology, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Economics, or a master’s degree in finance, international policy, or project management. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of the mining sector and for effectively contributing to the World Bank's initiatives.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the mining sector. This experience should encompass a deep understanding of specific mining industry issues, project management, and data analysis. Languages: Fluency in English and Spanish is required for this position, with Portuguese considered a plus. Additional Notes: This position is financed by a Trust Fund, and renewal is contingent upon the availability of funding, as well as other factors such as business needs and staff performance.
