Job Overview:
The consultant will primarily provide oral interpretation services between Arabic and English during meetings and events conducted by UN Women or its partners. This role is crucial for ensuring effective communication and understanding among participants, particularly in the context of humanitarian action where gender perspectives must be integrated. The consultant will also be responsible for written translation of key documents, knowledge products, and data collection surveys that support UN Women’s work in humanitarian contexts. The consultant will be engaged on an on-call basis, meaning they must be available as needed based on UN Women’s requirements. This position requires a high level of confidentiality and sensitivity due to the nature of the documents and discussions involved.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide quality simultaneous interpretation services during meetings and events from English to Arabic and vice versa.
  • Ensure precise use of language and terminology recognized in Sudan.
  • Adapt content to address cultural differences and local context.
  • Undertake content translation for various documents including media and web content, annual reports, project documents, newsletters, press releases, and speeches.
  • Conduct thorough revisions and proofreading of translated texts to ensure coherence and accuracy.
  • Utilize appropriate software for presentation and delivery of translated materials.
  • Be available for urgent translations or interpretations on a 24/7/365 basis.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in translation and interpreting or related fields is required.
  • Language certification or membership in accredited professional language institutions is an asset.
  • Proficiency in both English and Arabic is mandatory.
  • Outstanding reading, writing, translation, editing, and interpreting skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of technical matters in the working languages is required.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in translation and interpreting or a related field is required for this position. Additional language certifications or memberships in recognized professional organizations are considered advantageous.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in oral and written translation is required, particularly in institutional and legal documents. Familiarity with the operations of UN agencies and humanitarian action in Sudan is preferred. Proven experience in translating documents related to gender in humanitarian action, women's empowerment, and human rights will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Proficiency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. The ability to interpret and translate effectively between these two languages is crucial for the role.

Additional Notes:
The consultant will be engaged on an on-call basis, meaning they must be available as needed for interpretation and translation services. This position may involve working with highly confidential and sensitive materials, and the consultant will report to the Gender in Humanitarian Action Programme Analyst.
