Job Overview:
The consultant will work under the guidance of the Human Settlements Officer, contributing to the implementation of SDG localization initiatives. This role involves providing comprehensive project support, ensuring effective coordination and communication, and facilitating knowledge exchange among stakeholders. The consultant will also contribute to the technical development of methodologies that enhance SDG localization efforts and strengthen partnerships with academic institutions, local governments, and international organizations. A significant aspect of the role includes the successful completion and launch of the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) for Banjul, which will serve as a model for other cities. The position is integral to advancing the SDG localization agenda and ensuring that local governments are equipped to implement the SDGs effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's main responsibilities include: 1) Facilitating the coordination and implementation of SDG localization initiatives, managing partnerships, organizing events, and supporting the development of Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs). 2) Providing technical expertise in aligning academic research with UN-Habitat's SDG localization frameworks. 3) Developing reports and tracking project progress while contributing to knowledge dissemination through various communication materials. Specific duties include coordinating the Knowledge & Scientific Network (KSN), organizing events, providing administrative support, managing logistics for workshops, and assisting in the finalization of the VLR for Banjul. The consultant will also draft summaries and key messages from research outputs, develop technical presentations, and prepare comprehensive progress reports on various projects.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, or a related discipline relevant to the work of the United Nations. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. A minimum of two years of relevant working experience in international development, urban governance, project management, and research is required. Experience in locally driven SDG implementation with UN-Habitat or similar initiatives aligned with the UN system is highly valued.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in fields such as International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, or other related disciplines. Candidates with a first-level university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of urban governance and sustainable development as they relate to the SDGs.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant working experience in areas such as international development, urban governance, project management, and research and evaluation. Candidates with experience in SDG implementation at the local level, particularly those who have worked with UN-Habitat or similar organizations, will be preferred. This experience is crucial for effectively contributing to the SDG localization initiatives and understanding the challenges and opportunities in urban development.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this consultancy role. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders and contribute to international discussions on SDG localization.
