Job Overview: In this role, the Senior Investment Professional will be instrumental in scaling IDB Invest's impact by enhancing its international presence and origination capabilities. The position involves reporting to the manager responsible for International Business at the Industries and Cross-Cutting Themes Department (ICT) of IDB Invest, as well as to the Country Representative at the Global Partnerships Office (GPS) of IDB. The ICT department manages business and client engagement from an industry perspective, comprising six divisions that focus on core industries and cross-cutting themes. The Global Partnerships Office plays a crucial role in mobilizing resources and establishing relationships with strategic partners globally, including sovereign entities and philanthropic foundations. The Senior Investment Professional will be expected to engage in business development, market scanning, origination, and pipeline creation, while also representing IDB Invest at key industry events and maintaining senior-level relationships with executives and investors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Business Development & Market Scanning: Identify and proactively develop relationships with corporates, financial institutions, funds, family offices, and multinational investors interested in LAC. Monitor market trends to identify priority sectors and cross-border investment opportunities into LAC.
Origination & Pipeline Creation: Source and screen investment opportunities across priority sectors such as infrastructure, agribusiness, and climate. Build a qualified pipeline for IDB Invest financing, ensuring effective handover to structuring teams for due diligence.
Strategic Engagement & Partnerships: Represent IDB Invest at key industry events and investor forums, support the design and execution of high-profile events, and maintain relationships with C-suite executives and regional business councils.
Internal Coordination: Collaborate with various teams within IDB to align business development with institutional priorities, contribute to market strategies, and track outreach using CRM and market intelligence tools.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Masters, MBA, or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations, or a related field. They should have at least 8 years of relevant professional experience in investment banking, corporate development, private equity, or financial services, with a proven track record in sourcing and structuring private sector investments. A deep understanding of the market dynamics in LAC, strong client management experience, and familiarity with client needs and challenges are highly valued. Additionally, candidates should have a solid understanding of private sector practices, project finance, corporate finance, and blended finance instruments, with experience in emerging markets or with DFIs/IFIs being desirable.
Educational Background: An advanced degree (Masters, MBA, or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to navigate the complexities of investment and finance in the context of sustainable development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience, with a preference for candidates who have 15 years or more. This experience should be in investment banking, corporate development, private equity, business origination, or financial services, with a proven track record in sourcing and structuring private sector investments. Candidates should also have deep market knowledge of the respective region and its outbound investment flows, along with strong C-level network and client management experience.
Languages: Advanced proficiency in Japanese and English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is considered a strong advantage, as it would facilitate communication and engagement with a broader range of stakeholders in the region.
Additional Notes: The position is a national staff contract for an initial duration of 36 months, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Candidates must be eligible to work in Tokyo, Japan, without the need for sponsorship. Furthermore, applicants should not have any family members working at IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouses.
