Job Overview: The Sr. Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer will play a crucial role in providing technical support and managing staff involved in the STRengthening Infectious disease DEtection Systems (STRIDES) Activity in Indonesia. This position requires a proactive approach to enhance epidemiological surveillance activities, working closely with local ministries in health, agriculture, and environment. The officer will lead efforts to improve the quality and performance of epidemiology and surveillance services, ensuring that strategies for infectious disease detection are effectively developed and implemented. The role involves contributing to annual work planning, developing guidelines, and participating in technical meetings to provide thought leadership at the country level. The officer will also evaluate program effectiveness and support technical aspects of the STRIDES initiative, ensuring alignment with national objectives and targets.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Sr. Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer include contributing to the epidemiology and public health surveillance components of the project, supporting the design and implementation of surveillance activities, and providing technical expertise in training and capacity building. The officer will monitor project protocols and maintain technical tools and reports, working closely with national counterparts to fulfill objectives related to epidemiologic surveillance strategies. Responsibilities also include developing technical briefs, conducting analyses to identify areas for improvement, and coordinating with the global STRIDES surveillance team. The officer will provide on-the-job technical assistance, strengthen national expertise in health management information systems, and contribute to improving data reporting and quality. Additionally, the officer will support project design and implementation, monitor deliverables, and ensure activities align with approved budgets. The role requires participation in client meetings, drafting proposals, and ensuring timely submission of reports summarizing project progress.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess in-depth knowledge of public health surveillance concepts and practices, with extensive experience in strengthening disease surveillance systems. They should have experience in developing scopes of work and deliverables for partners and consultants, as well as proficiency in database management software. Strong organizational and analytical skills, excellent project management capabilities, and the ability to influence and collaborate with others are essential. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and have the ability to analyze and interpret data effectively.
Educational Background: A Master’s Degree or its international equivalent in epidemiology, public health, or a related health field is required for this position. Relevant training in epidemiology and surveillance, such as participation in Field Epidemiology Training Programs, is desirable. Candidates should have a solid educational foundation that supports the functions of the position.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in epidemiology and public health programs focused on infectious disease control, health analysis, and statistics. Prior work experience in NGOs, government agencies, or private organizations is essential, with a preference for candidates who have international or domestic program development experience. Familiarity with US government regulations and reporting requirements is also preferred.
Languages: Fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesian is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and may require up to 40% travel within the country. The role is full-time and involves working in a typical office environment. Candidates should be prepared for the physical demands of the job, including the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks on a computer.
