Job Posting Organization: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Established in 1957, the IAEA is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and has a mission to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world. The organization operates in over 170 countries and has a workforce of approximately 2,500 employees. The IAEA's work encompasses various fields, including nuclear safety, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, and safeguards, as well as the application of nuclear technology in areas such as health, agriculture, and environmental protection.
Job Overview: The internship program at the IAEA is designed to provide students and recent graduates with the opportunity to gain practical work experience that aligns with their academic studies or interests. Interns will be exposed to the work of the IAEA and the broader United Nations system. The primary aim of the internship is to support the IAEA's programs by leveraging the skills and knowledge of qualified students specializing in various professional fields. Interns will engage in analytical data-driven studies related to wetland hydrology and surface water-groundwater interactions, utilizing isotope techniques, geospatial analysis, and environmental datasets. This role will involve practical training in isotope data processing, geo-spatial analysis, and introductory programming skills relevant to hydrological investigations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Section Head and senior Isotope Hydrologists, the intern will be responsible for contributing to ongoing wetland-focused hydrological studies. Key duties include: assisting in the compilation, organization, and quality control of a global database of water isotopes in wetlands; performing spatial analysis tasks such as groundwater contour mapping, IDW/kriging interpolation, and river and lake catchment delineation using Digital Elevation Models (DEM) in QGIS; supporting data processing and basic scripting tasks related to the analysis of hydrological, isotope, and environmental datasets; and assisting with logistics, documentation, and data management related to isotope measurements and wetland-focused research projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental sciences, geochemistry, physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, or a related field. A background or demonstrated interest in wetland hydrology, surface water-groundwater interactions, or environmental water processes is essential. Familiarity with laboratory environments and isotope or chemical analysis is considered an asset. Candidates should have basic knowledge of data analysis and interpretation, with prior exposure to geospatial analysis tools such as QGIS being desirable. An interest in environmental datasets and quantitative analysis, along with introductory programming skills in Python and/or C, will be beneficial. Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills are also required.
Educational Background: Candidates must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree. They may apply up to one year after completing a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important that candidates have not previously participated in the IAEA's internship program.
Experience: The internship is aimed at individuals who are in the final stages of their undergraduate studies or have recently graduated. Candidates should have relevant academic experience in fields related to hydrology, environmental sciences, or similar disciplines, and should demonstrate a keen interest in applying their knowledge in a practical setting. Experience in a laboratory environment and familiarity with isotope or chemical analysis will be advantageous, although not mandatory.
Languages: Good written and spoken English is essential for this position. Fluency in any other IAEA official language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian, is considered an asset and will enhance the candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: The internship is offered for a duration of 12 months, providing a comprehensive opportunity for practical experience in a professional setting. The position is full-time and is intended for candidates who are either currently enrolled in a university program or have recently graduated. Candidates are required to submit two signed letters of recommendation along with their application. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain valuable experience in the field of isotope hydrology and contribute to important environmental research.
