Job Overview: The intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Human Rights Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the OHCHR's mission, particularly within the Europe and Central Asia Section. The intern's responsibilities will vary based on their background and may include compiling and analyzing information, reviewing documents related to OHCHR's work, and assisting Desk Officers in maintaining contacts with United Nations Country Teams, NGOs, and national human rights institutions. The intern will also coordinate missions of special rapporteurs and experts, assist with the Universal Periodic Review, and support the preparation of technical papers and speeches. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into the workings of the United Nations and contribute to meaningful human rights initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's daily responsibilities will include:
Compiling basic information and analyzing key human rights issues.
Collecting information and documents from United Nations headquarters and field offices.
Reviewing relevant documents to understand OHCHR's mandates and strategic policies.
Assisting Desk Officers in maintaining contacts with UN Country Teams, NGOs, and national human rights institutions.
Coordinating missions of special rapporteurs and experts in the region.
Supporting activities related to the Universal Periodic Review.
Assisting in organizing meetings, seminars, and official missions.
Performing other duties as requested by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). A background in international relations, international human rightslaw, political science, or related fields is desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates should have an academic background in fields relevant to human rights, such as international relations, international human rights law, political science, or similar disciplines. Enrollment in a graduate program or completion of a bachelor's degree is required for eligibility.
Experience: While specific professional experience is not mandated for this internship, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights issues and a commitment to the values of the United Nations. Previous internships or volunteer work in related fields may be advantageous but are not required.
Languages: Fluency in English or French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of the other language is considered an asset. Additionally, proficiency in another United Nations official language, such as Russian, would be advantageous.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
