Job Overview:
The Director of Nuclear Installation Safety is a senior leadership position within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. This role involves ensuring that the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety effectively responds to the priorities and needs of Member States regarding nuclear safety and security. The Director will oversee the development and implementation of safety standards for nuclear installations, ensuring that these standards are applied consistently across Member States. The position requires strategic thinking and the ability to integrate safety and security measures effectively. The Director will also be responsible for promoting education and training in nuclear safety, fostering information exchange, and coordinating research and development efforts in the field. This role is critical in maintaining a high level of safety for nuclear installations globally, particularly those that are under design, construction, or in operation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director will lead the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety, providing direction and guidance to staff while establishing and monitoring performance standards. Key responsibilities include directing the development of programs related to nuclear installation safety, coordinating assistance to Member States, and promoting international safety instruments such as the Convention on Nuclear Safety. The Director will represent the IAEA at international conferences, liaise with senior representatives from other organizations, and strengthen cooperation with international bodies. Additionally, the Director will contribute to the design and implementation of capacity-building strategies for safety and security activities, ensuring that the Division meets its objectives effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field. A first-level university degree combined with two years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the advanced degree. Applicants should have a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in nuclear safety management, with at least five years at a senior management or executive level. Experience in human and financial resource management, program planning, and organizational development is essential. A proven track record of leadership and international cooperation in nuclear safety is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree in these fields, along with two years of relevant work experience, may be considered. The educational background should reflect a strong foundation in nuclear safety principles and practices.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in nuclear safety management, with at least five years in a senior management or executive role. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in managing people, programs, and budgets, as well as a strong background in organizational development and program planning. Experience in international cooperation related to nuclear safety is considered an asset.

Languages:
Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $117,953, along with a variable post adjustment and various benefits such as rental subsidies, education grants, and health insurance. Candidates appointed to professional and higher categories are subject to the IAEA's rotation policy, with a maximum tour of service typically lasting seven years.
