Job Overview: The position involves conducting a comprehensive study on wastewater reuse policies in India, focusing on both quantitative and qualitative aspects. The study aims to assess the flows of wastewater generated and treated in India, in line with SDG indicator 6.3.
The selected partner will analyze existing policies, governance frameworks, and technical standards related to wastewater reuse, with a particular emphasis on innovative approaches and pilot initiatives. The study will also include a detailed investigation of a megacity to illustrate practical implementations of decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse, providing actionable insights for scaling sustainable practices in India and beyond.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties include designing the research methodology, collecting and analyzing data on wastewater treatment facilities, and assessing the regulatory and policy frameworks governing wastewater reuse in India. The partner will be responsible for conducting an in-depth investigation of a selected megacity, documenting governance mechanisms, reuse potential, and successful market mechanisms. Additionally, the partner will prepare detailed reports and presentations summarizing the findings, including recommendations for policy enhancements and best practices for wastewater management.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in environmental science, public policy, or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in wastewater management and treatment. Experience in conducting research and data analysis, particularly in the context of water reuse policies, is essential. The ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies and local communities, is also required. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary for preparing reports and presentations.
Educational Background: A minimum of a master's degree in environmental science, public policy, water resource management, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized certifications in wastewater management or sustainable development are preferred.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in research related to wastewater management, treatment, and reuse. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs in similar contexts is highly desirable. Proven track record of successful project management and collaboration with diverse stakeholders is essential.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with proficiency in Hindi or other regional languages considered an asset. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are necessary for effective reporting and stakeholder engagement.

The selected institution will receive a financial contribution of US$ 12,000 from UN-Habitat for successful deliverables. The Expression of Interest must be submitted electronically by 27 February 2026, and the process encourages collaboration among institutions, with a lead entity responsible for coordinating efforts. UN-Habitat reserves the right to modify or cancel the requirement at any stage of the process.
