Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization that focuses on sustainable development and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Established in 1965, UNDP operates in approximately 170 countries and territories, employing over 17,000 staff members. The organization aims to integrate local knowledge with global perspectives to address pressing development challenges. UNDP's Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) plays a crucial role in developing policies and guidance to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan, ensuring that issues of risk are integrated into development programs and advocating for corporate messages at various forums.

Job Overview:
The position of Online Volunteer Interpreter involves providing live interpretation for a 90-minute online validation workshop focused on Youth and Climate Justice. This workshop is part of UNDP's initiative to develop a Climate Justice Guide aimed at empowering youth-led advocacy and legal action in the context of climate change and environmental governance. The selected volunteers will interpret from English into Spanish, French, and Arabic, ensuring that diverse youth perspectives, particularly from the Global South, are incorporated into the guide. This role not only facilitates communication during the workshop but also contributes to the broader goal of promoting youth engagement in climate justice efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide live interpretation during the 90-minute online validation workshop using Zoom's interpretation tool.
  • Ensure accurate and clear communication of the workshop content from English to the target languages (Spanish, French, Arabic).
  • Familiarize yourself with the concept note and run of show provided prior to the workshop.
  • Engage with the Youth team at UNDP to understand the context and objectives of the workshop.
  • Gather and incorporate feedback from participants during the validation exercise.
  • Maintain professionalism and adhere to communication guidelines throughout the event.
  • Build connections with other participants and stakeholders involved in the workshop.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the target languages (Spanish, French, Arabic) is mandatory; proficiency in multiple target languages is highly desirable.
  • Experience in live interpretation or translation, particularly in a workshop or conference setting, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with climate justice, youth engagement, and sustainable development issues is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a virtual environment and engage with diverse participants.

Educational Background:
A background in languages, international relations, environmental studies, or a related field is preferred. Formal training in interpretation or translation is an advantage, but not strictly required if the candidate demonstrates relevant experience and skills.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in interpretation or translation, particularly in live settings. Experience working with youth organizations or on climate-related issues is beneficial. Familiarity with UNDP's mission and objectives will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Mandatory languages include English and at least one of the following: Spanish, French, or Arabic. Knowledge of additional languages is a plus and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.

Additional Notes:
This is a remote volunteer position, and the workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 February at 10 AM EST (3 PM UTC). The role is part-time and temporary, focused solely on the duration of the workshop. Volunteers will receive guidance and support from the UNDP Youth team, and this opportunity allows for networking and professional development in the field of climate justice.
