Job Overview: The Project Officer will be responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on the Japan Funds-in-Trust (J-FiT) project, which focuses on the conservation of the Archaeological Ruins of Moenjodaro in Pakistan and the reinforcement of disaster risk reduction mechanisms. The role requires a moderate level of autonomy in executing project activities, with full responsibility for day-to-day coordination and the preparation of technical and administrative outputs. The Project Officer will work closely with various stakeholders, including government departments, international experts, and local partners, to ensure the project's objectives are met effectively and efficiently. The position demands proactive planning, organization, and coordination to ensure timely delivery of outputs, while also adhering to UNESCO's rules and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Officer will undertake a variety of tasks, including managing and providing technical and administrative support for project implementation, coordinating with government and cultural institutions, and utilizing UNESCO's online management platforms for reporting and contract management. Responsibilities also include reviewing past project reports, establishing a Project Steering Committee, managing the project budget, preparing Terms of Reference and Requests for Proposals, monitoring contracts, conducting site visits, and ensuring effective communication and visibility of project activities. The Project Officer will also be responsible for preparing periodic reports for stakeholders and contributing to training workshops and resource mobilization efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Archaeology, Conservation, Architecture, Sociology, Anthropology, or Development Studies. Additionally, candidates should have strong organizational and coordination skills, analytical abilities, and the capacity to draft high-quality documents. Proven experience in building partnerships and excellent communication skills are also essential. Candidates should be proficient in IT skills, including office productivity software and online collaboration tools.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Archaeology, Conservation, Architecture, Sociology, Anthropology, Development Studies, or any other relevant discipline from a recognized institution is required for this position. A Master’s degree with specialization in areas such as Disaster Risk Reduction or Climate Change Adaptation is considered desirable.
Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in the development sector, preferably in culture or heritage management, is required. Candidates with at least two years of demonstrated experience in conservation/restoration projects and heritage management of archaeological or World Heritage Sites will be given preference. Knowledge of international heritage conservation standards, particularly UNESCO Cultural Conventions, is also beneficial.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) is mandatory, along with a good working knowledge of Urdu. Proficiency in the Sindhi language will be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in the local context.
