Job Overview:
The position of Specialized Economist within the IMF’s Statistics Department (STA) focuses on the Financial Institutions Division (STAFI) and is centered around the Financial Access workstream, particularly the Financial Access Survey (FAS) database. The successful candidate will be responsible for enhancing and maintaining the FAS, which provides critical data on financial inclusion across more than 190 economies. This role involves contributing to statistical methodologies, managing data, conducting analysis, and supporting capacity development initiatives aimed at strengthening the statistical capabilities of member countries. The position is designed for a three-year fixed term, with the possibility of extension, and requires collaboration with various departments within the IMF and external partners to ensure the effective dissemination and utilization of financial access data.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: enhancing and maintaining the Financial Access Survey (FAS), leading the revamp of the survey to improve financial sector and macro-financial surveillance; developing, updating, and implementing international statistical methodologies for the FAS; contributing to the Financial Health Data Framework; supporting the capacity development program for the FAS, including training and technical assistance; monitoring the automation process of FAS data collection; and assisting in reporting commitments to FAS donors. Additionally, the candidate will engage in research and analytical work to support STA’s objectives, mentor junior staff, collaborate with international organizations, and participate in departmental activities related to policy and data issues.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong educational background, typically acquired through considerable graduate work in Economics, Finance, Statistics, or a related field, or an advanced university degree in these areas, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience. Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree and at least five years of relevant experience. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of financial inclusion, strong data management skills, and technical expertise in statistical compilation and methodologies related to financial inclusion data. Proven experience in producing financial statistics within a financial sector authority is essential, along with a demonstrated track record in capacity development and research methodologies.

Educational Background:
A minimum requirement for this position is an advanced university degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics, or a related field. Candidates with considerable graduate work in these areas, supplemented by relevant work experience, will also be considered. The ideal educational background includes advanced studies that provide a comprehensive understanding of economic and financial principles, statistical methodologies, and data analysis techniques relevant to financial inclusion.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience, with preference given to those with at least five years of experience in a related field. Experience working in multilateral organizations is considered a strong asset. The candidate should demonstrate a proven ability to manage a wide range of assignments, work under tight deadlines, and contribute effectively to team objectives while also being capable of working independently.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills required. A working knowledge of additional languages such as Spanish, French, or Arabic would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to international collaboration.

This position is a three-year fixed term appointment with the possibility of extension for an additional year. The role is classified under the A11 to A14 levels within the IMF, indicating a seniority level that requires significant expertise and experience.
