Job Overview:
The Clinical Care & Occupational Health Officer position is designed to enhance medical liaison, occupational health, and emergency preparedness capacity within Mogadishu while also providing roving clinical support to other UN Clinics as necessary. The role involves delivering occupational health services to UN personnel, conducting clinical consultations, and responding to medical emergencies. The officer will be responsible for ensuring safe clinical handovers and facilitating referrals to appropriate medical facilities. Additionally, the position requires conducting medical follow-ups and liaising with local hospitals for admitted UN staff, as well as providing medical advice to staff with chronic or work-related health conditions. The officer will also play a crucial role in supporting emergency preparedness activities and health promotion initiatives, contributing to the overall health and well-being of UN personnel in a challenging operational environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Care & Occupational Health Officer will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Providing occupational health services to UN personnel in Mogadishu, including clinical consultations and emergency response.
  • Supporting the referral of patients to appropriate medical facilities and ensuring safe clinical handovers.
  • Conducting medical follow-ups and liaising with local hospitals for admitted UN staff.
  • Supporting clinical assessments related to fitness for work, travel, and return-to-work evaluations.
  • Facilitating referrals to approved medical providers and ensuring proper documentation and clinical justification.
  • Assisting in medico-administrative processes, including medical evacuation coordination and case documentation.
  • Liaising with agency medical sections, HR, and health focal points regarding staff medical matters while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Conducting hospital and clinic assessments to support the expansion and quality assurance of approved medical networks.
  • Providing surge/roving clinical support to UN Clinics in other duty stations as required. 1
  • Supporting emergency preparedness activities, including training and drills. 1
  • Contributing to workplace health promotion initiatives and preventive health programs. 1
  • Maintaining accurate clinical, administrative, and training records in line with UN Clinic procedures. 1
  • Contributing to reports, data collection, and operational documentation.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a range of qualifications, including:
  • A medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Valid medical license to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Certification in occupational health or emergency medicine is highly desirable.
  • Strong clinical skills and experience in emergency response and occupational health services.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Proficiency in using medical software and electronic health records is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of UN policies and procedures related to health and safety is a plus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a medical degree from a recognized institution, along with a valid medical license to practice in the relevant jurisdiction. Additional certifications in occupational health or emergency medicine are highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a strong background in clinical care, with significant experience in emergency response and occupational health services. Previous experience working in challenging environments, particularly in humanitarian or emergency settings, is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to manage medical emergencies effectively and provide clinical support in high-pressure situations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UN. Knowledge of Somali or other local languages is considered an asset and may enhance communication with local staff and patients.

The UN Volunteer may be required to travel to other duty stations within Somalia to provide clinical support, conduct assessments, and participate in emergency preparedness activities.
