Job Overview:

The intern will play a crucial role in compiling, collating, and analyzing datasets related to disaster impacts, which is essential for developing a standardized view of disaster risk. The role requires a highly motivated individual with a strong understanding of disaster impacts and attention to detail. The intern will be involved in reviewing various datasets that estimate disaster losses, enhancing these datasets using AI tools, and identifying average losses by impact area. The position also includes developing a dissemination package for the analyzed data and providing general support to the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) team on ADB's climate and disaster risk activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review and compile datasets estimating disaster losses in Asia Pacific, considering various impact areas such as affected population, damage to physical assets, economic losses, and environmental impacts.
  • Enhance datasets by consolidating data records and improving the granularity of information, including subnational event locations and key sectors affected.
  • Identify average losses by impact area to inform a consistent view of disaster impacts.
  • Develop a dissemination package that includes a guidance note, PowerPoint presentation, and a short paper summarizing key findings from the data analysis.
  • Identify future directions for leveraging AI and emerging technologies to enhance disaster impact data capture and management.
  • Provide inputs to ADB's climate and disaster risk data collection work in the Pacific as requested by the Team Lead.
  • Offer general support to the DRM team on ADB's climate and disaster risk activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a master's degree or PhD program focused on disaster risk management, climate change, hydrology, GIS, environmental engineering, environmental economics, statistics, or a similar field.
  • Knowledge or experience working with Developing Member Countries (DMC) governments.
  • Awareness of the policy architecture of Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change related to Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and ADB's DMCs.
  • Experience quantifying the economic impacts of disasters is an asset but not essential.
  • Experience in applied research, including literature reviews and stakeholder consultations.
  • Preferably 2-3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a master's degree or PhD program that focuses on relevant fields such as disaster risk management, climate change, hydrology, GIS, environmental engineering, environmental economics, or statistics. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern has the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to effectively contribute to the team's objectives.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have preferably 2-3 years of relevant professional experience. This experience should ideally include knowledge or experience working with Developing Member Countries (DMC) governments, as well as familiarity with the policy frameworks surrounding Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change. Experience in quantifying the economic impacts of disasters is considered an asset, although it is not mandatory. Additionally, candidates should have experience in applied research, which includes conducting literature reviews and engaging in stakeholder consultations.

Languages:
The mandatory language requirement for this position is excellent proficiency in English, both oral and written. This is crucial for effective communication within the team and for presenting findings to stakeholders. While not mandatory, knowledge of additional languages relevant to the Asia-Pacific region could be beneficial and may enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
The internship is expected to last for a duration of 11 weeks, starting from June 2025 onwards. The position is based at the ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines. This internship is a full-time role, and candidates should be prepared to commit to the full duration of the assignment.
