Job Overview:
The Local Agronomist position is integral to the FAO Representation in Georgia, specifically under the UTF/GEO/034/GEO-F project, which focuses on land consolidation in Georgia. The role is designed to provide local support in selected pilot areas, particularly in the municipalities of Kareli and Gori. The overarching goal of the project is to establish a fully operational land consolidation instrument that integrates irrigation rehabilitation, contributing to increased agricultural production, efficient land use, and improved access to land and credit. The Local Agronomist will work closely with local stakeholders, including farmers and public authorities, to facilitate community engagement and ensure the successful implementation of land consolidation activities. This position requires a strong understanding of agricultural practices and policies, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Local Agronomist will be responsible for providing technical support for the implementation of the land consolidation pilot project. Key duties include:
  • Supporting the day-to-day implementation of the pilot project, including communication with local authorities, landowners, and farmers.
  • Engaging with communities to build consensus and prevent conflicts related to land consolidation activities.
  • Conducting interviews with landowners and collecting data to contribute to the identification and inventory of stakeholders in the pilot areas.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the Land Consolidation Feasibility Study Report, analyzing agricultural conditions, and assessing potential outcomes.
  • Supporting the land valuation process and participating in land re-allotment activities.
  • Aligning land consolidation efforts with agricultural support programs and government policies to incentivize participation.
  • Facilitating local stakeholder consultations and supporting the adoption and implementation of the Land Consolidation Plan.
  • Contributing to the development of the National Land Consolidation Programme based on pilot experiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Agriculture, Land Management, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in agronomy, horticulture, or soil management is required, with knowledge of land consolidation considered an asset. Candidates should have a working knowledge of English at a C-level for both speaking and writing, and must be nationals of Georgia. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong communication and coordination skills, as well as proficiency in computer literacy, particularly with spreadsheets and databases.

Educational Background:
The position requires a university degree in Agriculture, Land Management, or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of agricultural practices and land management, which are critical to the success of the land consolidation project.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in agronomy, horticulture, plant production, or soil management. Experience working with rural communities and farmers, as well as involvement in multi-disciplinary teams and large-scale development projects, will be advantageous. Familiarity with government policies and agricultural support programs is also important.

Languages:
A working knowledge of English is mandatory, with a C-level proficiency required for both speaking and writing. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not specified as a requirement.
