Job Overview: The Animal HealthAdvisor will play a crucial role in supporting the Department of State-funded Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, which is aligned with the Global Health security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Agenda (GHSA). This position is vital for enhancing the capacity of the Burundian government to detect and respond to zoonotic diseases, which are diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. The advisor will work closely with various stakeholders, including government ministries, veterinary laboratories, and development partners, to implement strategies that strengthen animal health systems and improve disease surveillance. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and collaboration to ensure effective implementation of health protocols and to enhance the overall health security framework in Burundi.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Animal Health Advisor will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including providing technical assistance to national stakeholders to enhance surveillance and response for zoonotic diseases. The advisor will lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of animal health programs, ensuring that disease prevention and control measures are effectively integrated into operations. Additionally, the advisor will support the strengthening of veterinary laboratory systems, focusing on diagnostic capacity, quality management, and biosafety protocols. The role also involves guiding the development of technical guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for zoonotic diseases, facilitating multisectoral coordination through the One Health platform, and leading training programs for veterinary professionals. The advisor will oversee emergency response efforts for outbreaks, assist in developing preparedness plans, and contribute to the preparation of technical reports and documentation related to project activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or an equivalent degree in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Science, or a related field. A master’s degree in public health, Epidemiology, One Health, or a related discipline is preferred. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of eight years of relevant experience in animal health, zoonotic disease surveillance, and veterinary laboratory systems. Demonstrated experience in strengthening laboratory systems, knowledge of global health security frameworks, and previous collaboration with government ministries and development partners are essential. Strong technical writing skills and the ability to provide effective training and capacity building are also required.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or an equivalent degree in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Science, or a related field. A master’s degree in public health, Epidemiology, One Health, or a related discipline is preferred, as it provides a broader understanding of the public health implications of zoonotic diseases and the necessary skills for effective program implementation.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of eight years of relevant experience in the fields of animal health, zoonotic disease surveillance, and veterinary laboratory systems. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with zoonotic diseases, emerging pathogens, and outbreak investigation and response. Experience in strengthening veterinary laboratory systems and knowledge of global health security frameworks such as JEE, PVS Pathway, and NAPHS is crucial for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is required for this position, as effective communication with various stakeholders is essential. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if it enhances communication with local communities or government officials.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Bujumbura, Burundi, and will require a minimum of 25% in-country travel. The role may involve supervisory responsibilities, and candidates must be authorized to work in Burundi.
