Job Overview: The director-general" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Assistant Director-General for Culture is a pivotal role within UNESCO, responsible for providing strategic leadership and intellectual vision for the Culture Sector. Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Director-General for Culture will be responsible for:
Providing strategic direction and leadership in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the Culture Sector’s strategy, policies, and programs.
Promoting the role of culture, heritage, and creativity as enablers of sustainable social and economic development.
Leading the implementation of UNESCO’s cultural conventions and supporting Member States in translating global frameworks into national actions.
Overseeing the protection, conservation, and transmission of cultural heritage.
Fostering creativity and the diversity of cultural expressions, strengthening cultural and creative industries.
Enhancing the Culture Sector’s contribution to conflict prevention and recovery, ensuring culture is integrated into humanitarian strategies.
Developing high-level partnerships with various stakeholders to expand the Sector’s reach.
Promoting innovation and knowledge sharing, anticipating emerging trends in culture.
Ensuring effective management and accountability within the Sector, fostering a culture of performance and diversity.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a discipline related to culture. They should have at least 15 years of progressively responsible experience in senior leadership roles related to UNESCO’s Culture Programme, including international assignments. A proven record of leadership in developing and implementing policies and programs in culture is essential, along with experience in managing large teams and organizational transformation. Candidates should also demonstrate substantial experience in representing organizations and engaging with high-level officials.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field related to culture is required. A Ph.D. level degree in culture or related areas is desirable, as it indicates a higher level of expertise and commitment to the field.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in senior leadership or executive positions. This experience should include work directly related to UNESCO’s Culture Programme and may involve assignments at regional or international levels. Demonstrated leadership in policy development and implementation, as well as experience in managing diverse teams and organizational change, is crucial.
Languages: Excellent knowledge and drafting skills in one of the working languages of UNESCO (English or French) are mandatory. A working knowledge of the second language is desirable. Knowledge of other official languages of UNESCO, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is also beneficial and can enhance a candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: The position is for a duration of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal. It is open to both internal and external candidates. The approximate annual starting salary for this position is US$ 248,223, and benefits may include 30 days of annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
