Job Overview:
The Communications and Advocacy Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the planning and implementation of UN Women's communications and advocacy strategies in Ethiopia. Reporting directly to the Country Representative, the Analyst is responsible for enhancing the visibility and awareness of UN Women among partners, media, and the public. This position requires close collaboration with various teams within the Country Office, as well as with regional and headquarters communications teams, other UN agencies, government officials, and civil society organizations. The Analyst will provide substantive support in designing external communication strategies, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into all communications. The role also involves monitoring media coverage, launching campaigns, and developing advocacy materials to promote UN Women's initiatives and messages effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Communications and Advocacy Analyst include:
  • Assisting in the planning and design of external communication and outreach strategies.
  • Analyzing communication strategies to ensure they incorporate a gender perspective.
  • Integrating communication and advocacy strategies into project proposals.
  • Monitoring and analyzing print and social media, providing insights to the Country Office and Regional Office.
  • Supporting the launch of UN Women campaigns and special events.
  • Developing and disseminating advocacy materials.
  • Drafting briefing materials and press releases, coordinating their dissemination.
  • Identifying storylines for publications and articles.
  • Coordinating media relations and maintaining a list of relevant media contacts. 1
  • Organizing press conferences and discussions. 1
  • Building partnerships with donors and maintaining relationships with advocacy partners. 1
  • Managing the Country Office's online presence, including social media and website content. 1
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and conducting training on communication and advocacy. 1
  • Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the office.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree in the same fields may be accepted if accompanied by proven relevant experience. Candidates should possess strong communication, networking, and advocacy skills, with a strategic and analytical mindset. Knowledge of gender and human rights issues is desirable, along with experience in social media outreach and web-based management systems. Proven skills in graphic design and familiarity with Adobe Suite are also required.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a relevant field. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in these areas, combined with significant professional experience, may be considered sufficient for the role.

Experience:
The role requires at least 1 year of relevant experience for candidates with a Master’s degree, or a minimum of 2 years of professional experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy for those with a Bachelor’s degree. Experience in social media management and proficiency in office software packages, including MS Word and Excel, are essential. Familiarity with web-based management systems and skills in graphic design, photography, and video production are also highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Amharic is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

The position does not entail supervisory responsibilities, except for temporary oversight of media or communications contractors as needed.
