Job Overview: The Media and Communications Officer will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of Mission and in coordination with the Regional Media Communications Officer and Spokesperson in the Regional Office. The incumbent will play a crucial role in enhancing IOM's media and public relations efforts, as well as internal and external communication activities. This position involves implementing media and communication initiatives that highlight IOM's activities in Ireland. The officer will be responsible for maintaining relationships with media outlets, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to effectively communicate IOM's objectives and promote the organization's visibility. The role also includes drafting communication frameworks, producing content for social media, and coordinating media briefings, ensuring that IOM's messaging aligns with its strategic priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Media and Communications Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Liaising with media representatives and stakeholders to inform them about IOM's activities and objectives.
Drafting and disseminating press releases, feature stories, articles, and op-eds.
Coordinating media briefings in collaboration with the Regional Office and other UN agencies.
Monitoring media coverage and trends related to migration, providing insights and recommendations to the Chief of Mission and HQ.
Maintaining an updated database of media contacts and partners in Ireland.
Acting as the media focal point for IOM Ireland, handling press inquiries and facilitating interviews.
Preparing and disseminating outreach materials, including publications and reports.
Integrating media and communication components into project activities and budgets.
Supervising and guiding assigned staff members and interns. 1
Performing any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Mission.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication skills, particularly in media and communication, and have experience interacting with media outlets. Knowledge of Irish institutions related to media, communications, and migration is advantageous. Previous experience in media or communications at a national or international level is required. Familiarity with web content management systems (CMS), graphic design software, and social media platforms is essential. Experience in an international or multicultural environment is also beneficial.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Political Sciences, or a related field from an accredited academic institution is required, along with five years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a high school diploma with seven years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a strong background in media and communications, with a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience for those with a Bachelor's degree, or seven years for those with a high school diploma. Experience in drafting communication materials, managing media relations, and working in a multicultural environment is highly valued. Candidates should also demonstrate proficiency in using various communication tools and platforms.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could include written and/or oral assessments.
