Job Overview:
The Laboratory and Diagnostics Officer will play a crucial role in providing technical leadership and guidance for the anticipated USAID-funded Global Health security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security project in Zambia. This position involves leading the development, implementation, and monitoring of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening laboratory systems and enhancing diagnostic capacities. The officer will work closely with various stakeholders, including project management teams and technical providers, to ensure the delivery of high-quality laboratory services. Responsibilities include developing guidelines and policies, contributing to project work plans, and providing technical assistance to improve access to quality diagnostic testing. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying challenges and implementing solutions to enhance laboratory capacity in Zambia.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory and Diagnostics Officer will be responsible for providing overall technical leadership for the laboratory and diagnostic services component of the STRIDES project. This includes monitoring project protocols, collaborating with national and local counterparts, and developing technical briefs and reports. The officer will also provide subject matter expertise in laboratory network strengthening activities, support the scale-up of new diagnostic tools, and mentor project team members. Additionally, the officer will promote the integration of new diagnostic technologies, develop project work plans, and monitor project activities to ensure alignment with overall goals. The role involves building relationships with various stakeholders, preparing reports for USAID, and managing project timelines and budgets.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field within clinical or medical laboratory diagnostics. The position requires a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in infectious disease diagnostics or laboratory systems strengthening. Extensive knowledge of laboratory practices, diagnostic techniques, and quality assurance systems is essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to design and manage laboratory strengthening initiatives and have experience in capacity-building activities such as training and mentoring. Familiarity with USG-funded projects and experience working with government agencies and NGOs is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in microbiology or its equivalent in biological sciences is required for this position. The educational background should be focused on clinical or medical laboratory diagnostic disciplines, ensuring that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to excel in the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least 4 years of relevant experience in the field of infectious disease diagnostics or laboratory systems strengthening. This experience should include a deep understanding of laboratory practices, diagnostic techniques, and quality assurance systems. Candidates should also have a proven track record of designing and implementing laboratory strengthening initiatives and engaging in capacity-building activities such as training and mentoring laboratory personnel.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as the officer will be required to communicate effectively with clients and staff. While English proficiency is essential, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if it enhances communication with local stakeholders and communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Lusaka, Zambia, and involves a commitment to travel approximately 10% to 25% of the time. The role does not have supervisory responsibilities but requires collaboration with various teams and stakeholders.
