Job Overview: The Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer will play a crucial role in providing technical support and managing staff involved in the STRIDES project in Zambia. This position requires the officer to monitor and strengthen epidemiological surveillance activities, ensuring effective implementation of strategies for infectious disease detection and surveillance. The officer will work closely with various ministries and health institutions, leading efforts to enhance the quality and performance of epidemiology and surveillance interventions. Responsibilities include planning and implementing activities, participating in technical meetings, and contributing to the development of guidelines and policies. The role demands a proactive approach to evaluating program effectiveness and providing technical assessments to improve health outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Officer include providing overall technical direction on epidemiological surveillance, supporting the design and implementation of surveillance systems, and coordinating with global teams to ensure effective sharing of experiences. The officer will conduct analyses to identify areas for improvement, develop training materials, and deliver training to various stakeholders. Responsibilities also encompass monitoring project protocols, assisting in the development of technical briefs and reports, and ensuring that project activities align with national health objectives. The officer will be involved in project design, implementation, and reporting, ensuring that all activities are executed according to established guidelines and best practices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in epidemiology and public health, with a focus on infectious disease control. Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree or its international equivalent in epidemiology, public health, or a related field is required for this position. Advanced degrees may be preferred, depending on the candidate's experience and expertise in the relevant areas.
Experience: Typically, candidates should have at least 4 years of relevant experience in epidemiology and public health programs, particularly those related to infectious diseases. Experience in both national and international contexts is valuable, as is familiarity with the WHO International Health Regulations and outbreak response protocols. Previous work in NGOs, government agencies, or private sectors will be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly in regions where the STRIDES project operates.
