  • The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), which is part of UNEP, was established in April 2012 and has a membership of over 150 Governments. IPBES aims to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services, responding to the needs of governments and stakeholders.

Job Overview:
The Consultant for Stakeholder Engagement will work under the direct supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications and closely with the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Officer. The primary functions of this position include strategically planning, organizing, and overseeing the operationalization of stakeholder days in advance of IPBES Plenary sessions. This involves managing logistical arrangements for stakeholder days, including project team collaboration, agenda-setting, outreach, and event management for both in-person and online participation. The consultant will also be responsible for deepening and expanding stakeholder engagement, assessing and reporting on the implementation of the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, and improving communication with IPBES stakeholders. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying and expanding relevant stakeholder networks, particularly focusing on under-represented groups and enhancing IPBES's reach to diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Consultant will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Strategic planning and logistical management for stakeholder days, ensuring effective collaboration and communication among project teams.
  • In-person management of event logistics, including speaker management and liaison with technical teams and local partners.
  • Conducting stakeholder surveys and analyzing results to improve stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Acting as the focal point for recognized stakeholder networks and key groups, enhancing IPBES's outreach efforts.
  • Collaborating with the communications team to create and publish content related to stakeholder engagement.
  • Planning and implementing outreach events targeting underserved communities.
  • Co-creating audio and visual materials to promote engagement opportunities.
  • Maintaining and improving the TRACK Impact Tracking Database to monitor stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Strengthening collaboration with IPBES Technical Support Units to mobilize stakeholder engagement across the work programme.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience will also be accepted. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network-building, or communications is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to write clear and concise drafts in English, are essential. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively are also necessary. Knowledge of environmental issues and familiarity with IPBES and biodiversity matters are desirable, as is experience in an international organization or intergovernmental context, particularly within the United Nations.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a university degree, preferably a Master's degree or equivalent, in fields such as communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, or related disciplines. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by relevant professional experience.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in areas such as stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network-building, or communications. Experience in an international organization or intergovernmental context, especially within the United Nations, is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in any other official United Nations language, particularly French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.
