Job Overview:
The Security Operations Centre Assistant (SOC Assistant) plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS). This position involves operating and communicating using UN standard telecommunications facilities, including VHF and HF radio networks. The SOC Assistant is responsible for maintaining communication with field staff and headquarters, tracking missions, and advising on security-related issues. The role requires a proactive approach to information-sharing, ensuring that all relevant personnel are informed of important communications. Additionally, the SOC Assistant must monitor compliance with security communication protocols and support information management by maintaining updated staff and vehicle lists. Duties and Responsibilities:
The SOC Assistant's duties include:
  • Supporting daily operations by operating UN telecommunications facilities, maintaining radio contact, and tracking missions.
  • Ensuring information-sharing by logging and distributing incoming and outgoing messages and disseminating security advisories.
  • Monitoring compliance with security communication protocols and implementing standard operating procedures.
  • Supporting information management by maintaining updated staff lists and ensuring confidentiality of communications.
  • Ensuring the functional operability of the Security Operations Centre (SOC) by maintaining equipment and reporting issues.
  • Performing additional functions as required, including training UN partners and collaborating with other agencies' telecom services.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess secondary education as a minimum requirement. A university degree in Political Science, Military Studies, Security Management, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory. Applicable security, police, or military training is desirable, and a certificate in radio telecommunications is considered an added advantage. Knowledge of hardware installation and maintenance, as well as proficiency in operating HF and VHF radios, is essential. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications, are also required.

Educational Background:
The position requires at least secondary education, with a preference for candidates holding a bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as Political Science, Military Studies, or Security Management. While a degree is not mandatory, it will be given due consideration during the selection process. Additional training in security, police, or military operations is desirable, along with a certificate in radio telecommunications.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of experience in radio communications if they possess secondary education, or at least 1 year of experience if they hold a bachelor's degree. Experience as a radio operator, call agent, or in a related field is desirable. Previous experience with the United Nations or familiarity with the host country's safety regulations is also beneficial. A valid driver's license is required.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess strong communication skills in both languages to effectively operate within the UN's diverse environment. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, but are not required.

This position is based in Port Sudan and may require candidates to relocate within the country and travel on official business as needed.
